Just FYI- for many car companies doing business in the US, the intent has been to drop the model names down to an alphanumeric designation as an effort to remove attention from the individual models and place more recognition on the brand. This is usually being done by foreign automakers who are attempting to establish a stronger "brand" identity in the US. That is why you find this mostly in the US.

The name LR3 came up in US after their Discovery2 model to avoid the negative quality association with the name of "Discovery". But yeah Im glad that Land Rovers are reconsidering the where Discovery model stands in their brand. Discovery model was becoming too much like Range, too luxuorious.

2016? how is this news? Ayways, I hate the LR names, theyre so stupid. What are they planning on calling the next LR2? the LR3? they can't do that, because it already exsist. LR6? well that makes no sense. Can't we have the "Discovery" name back Land Rover?

I agree bout the Land Rover names, and carry that sentiment to several other brands. Enough with the letter and numbers. It works for BMW because they have done it forever and first. Also, the 3,5 and 7 series is a simple and orderly progression. As soon as you start to put in additional codes like LR or MK, and several companies start to do it, murkiness reigns. When you replace real, and familiar names with codes, murkiness reigns. When you start filling in gaps with niche models, murkiness reigns.

They only use those in North America and I am not sure why. For Europe it's much simpler: Defender, Freelander 2, Evoque, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. This story makes sense by the way. Now RR is an established sub brand it's sensible to position LR as more utilitarian to keep the grass roots buyers sweet and give the LandCrusier some competition.

I agree, I think it should just be "Discovery" in the US too, it will get too complicated. And anyway Discovery (DISCO) is a great name for a car
