Audi R4 axed, A2 delayed - report
A sad day in Germany
According to a recent report, Audi has killed the highly-anticipated R4.
While nothing is official, Auto Motor and Sport says the model was axed because it would steal sales from the Audi TT and Porsche Boxster / Cayman. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Bluesport variant would likely have been too expensive to be competitive.
In related news, the Audi A2 revival has reportedly been delayed until 2016. Details are limited, but Volkswagen wants the car to be built on a group platform instead of a bespoke chassis.

TT should be axed and the R4 given the green light. R4+R8+Quattro Concept...what a trio.

Wow! Audi (or is it VW Group?) has the luxury to terminate a project because it is too good? Fail the smartest kid in the class because he/she makes the rest look irrelevant?
Rather can the Beetle, return TT closer to the original TT and rename it the New New Beetle. Then bring on the R4 & Bluesport. Don't have a clue about Cayman (I think its boxer engine will retain it's appeal to the discerning) and certainly no pity for Boxster.

I thought the Cayman is good but if it's afraid of a car that hasn't been made yet... More VW bureaucracy robbing us of a good car! :( was looking foward to this and the quattro

I think the TT replacement should become the R4, to bring it in line with the R8 and any other future Audi Sports Cars

I agree. I thought the R4 would replace the TT. Maybe the TT is cheaper to make than the R4. The R8 and 911 compete, why not one more?
I was also hoping Porsche would come out with a smaller/cheaper/lighter bare-bones sports car (possibly 3-cylinder). But maybe there's no market there either or they do not want to dilute their brand?
VW/Audi/Porsche MUST give sports car enthusiaist an alternative to the Mazda. Early Porsche 996s (911) and 986s (Boxster) with modifications is probably the best alternative when it comes to over all value.

Shame... I've noticed an over-proliferation of A1 A3 A4 A5 A6 A7 A8's models... but the only other "R" model, the R4 they cancel? What are you hiding Audi?

audi should axe their design team first... i don't think audi can steal any sales from porsche.. who will be dumb enough to buy an audi if they can afford a porsche..

people who want a small , fast, nimble AWD car, what the R4 was supposed to be.

That's just wrong! It would've been first interesting Audi in a long time.
