BMW tops Mercedes in U.S. premium sales in April - leads 2011 sales by just 29 units over arch-rival
2011 BMW 5-Series M Sport 05.05.2010

BMW and Mercedes are on track to beat Lexus this year - the usual leader in U.S. premium sales which won the sales title in 2010

It's still a horse-race for which brand is going to top the premium sales market in the United States.

But for the time being, BMW is the leader. The Bavarian brand topped the premium market in April by selling 18,801 units and beating its arch-rival Mercedes-Benz.

That puts BMW ahead in 2011 sales so far by just 29 units over Mercedes - with 71,417 vehicles sold under the BMW brand for the first four months of the year compared to Mercedes's 71,388 unit sales.

BMW sales were buoyed by the popularity of the relatively new 5-Series and new X3 models.

The leader in U.S. premium sales over most of the last decade has been Lexus which also won the sales title in 2010. But so far this year Lexus, plagued by production problems, has lagged behind, logging just 64,932 deliveries for the first four months of 2011.

Where would Audi be? Well, Audi will be the worst selling (which I totally don't understand) in the US, like each year, right? I think Audi is the best premium brand on this planet.

Audis have come a long way, but in many ways they still feel like a VW. This is to their detriment.

No need to compare Audi to BMW and Mercedes, why should they concider an overprized VW, where all models looks the same?

Then you can say a Lexus is an overpriced Toyota and an Infiniti is an overpriced Nissan.

Yeah, because the majority of MB and BMW's core customers, which have a median age of about 50yr old, are mostly hardcore ballers, athletes pop stars and pimps. Holla..

C'mon people... This reason is very boring. They all look the same way... Find somethnig else to say. All BMW, all Mercedes have the same line in design...

When you sit in the cabin of an Audi, most controls and design patterns feel like when you rent a VW at the airport. It's a good brand, but it is not a leader.

Your right, BMW and Merc do have a very similar line of design which has always been understated. Audi however have always been too scared to have a design opinion and have always had a design which was so bland it almost isnt called design. They've taken understated to a whole new level. Even their R8 is a very basic and simple design so that it doesn't have a personality and therefore fits into a wider range of peoples lives that do have different personalities. Having worked for both VW and Audi I can honestly say that after driving them both I actually prefer driving the VW. Which is not saying much for the price tag they are asking. Especially when all you seem to get is a little extra sound deadening for another 20 grand.

Saw an Audi A7 in the metal today for the first time and i didnt realy know i was looking at the A7 until my eyes went over the rear of the car and onto the rear lights. The front looks damn near identicle to the A5, A4 and A8, it just has a lower slung front section. Saw the new A8 for the first time aswell and well yeah its a huge A4. Its pathetic. If im gona spend craploads of money on a car i'd love some individuality.

I totally agree with Boogie.... All Audis look the same...perhaps that is their biggest drawback, plus their mostly FWD. Mercedes has clear distinctions between their model segments...and their mostly RWD. BMW, well they are pure sex on wheels...and their mostly RWD. What else would you need to pick up chicks. RWD rules.

Audi is very unrelible. At least in America I had a passat and It was always getting fixed, all my friends who had an Audi or VW never want one again.

Yeah I love the R8, looks great, not sure how they will ever manage to facelift it because it's just beautiful in my eyes

don't worry.. .the same R8 design will keep going for at least another 20 years.. and the 'facelift' won't be noticeable by anyone but yourself anyway..
