BMW 1M faster around Hockenheim than M3
2012 BMW 1-Series M Coupe 10.12.2010

The BMW 1-Series M Coupe has beaten its big brother the M3 is lapping the Hockenheim

Well, here's an item that proves that being small and nimble has its advantages.

According to tests by German sports car magazine Sport Auto, the BMW 1-Series M Coupe has beaten its big brother the M3 in lapping the Hockenheim.

Sport Auto got a lap time of 1:14.1 for the 1-Series M while the quickest time around the track for the M3 (E92 M3 ZCP DCT) came in 0.1 second slower - 1:14.2.

That's not much but still impressive.

On the Hockenheim, the 1-Series M clocked the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 4.7 seconds too.

Auto Sport also reported that the 1-Series M Coupe had a frisky tendency to spin its rear end out without the stability control engaged, but they see that as a good sign since most cars in its category would under-steer by design.

Here's the list of Sport Auto's track times for each model tested.

Porsche Cayman R PDK - 1:12.4
BMW E46 M3 CSL - 1:13.5
Porsche 987.5 Cayman S PDK - 1:13.9
Porsche 987.5 Cayman S MT - 1:14.0
BMW 1M Coupe - 1:14.1
BMW E92 M3 ZCP DCT - 1:14.2
Audi TT-RS Coupe - 1:14.3
BMW E92 M3 6MT (Cup+ Tires) - 1:14.3
Audi RS5 Coupe - 1:15.3
BMW Z4 35iS - 1:16.1
BMW 135i Coupe - 1:17.4

i would get the 1M too, but mainly because of the huge tax difference between the 4.0l and the 3.0l engine where i live.

I'd get the 1M also... I just like it better. Small and nimble with a great flared look--it's a good direction for BMW to take... love it! By-the-way, that Cayman R is quick! That's the car for me...

I would get the 1M. It's almost as fast as an M3, easier to live with and lower running costs.

You could probably find a main dealer pre-owned E90 M3 for less than ?30k now. Extend the manufacturer warranty and it should be fine to live with. The 1M is a great car, clearly nobody is saying otherwise. BUT for me, the M3 is more of a beast. A man's car that's wild and harder to control. Plus with a Capristo or Akrapovic, that V8 sounds epic.

That's the beauty of this car. It's not about aesthetics. It's about satisfying the hunger for motorheads that want a simple small lightweight car with good driving dynamics...just like the old E30 M3.

:) I really hope this thing is as much fun as the original E30 M3 and can be regarded as a true spiritual successor.

THERE IS NOTHING LIGHTWEIGHT about this car. Just because BMW prints "lightweight" people believe it. Cayman R is like 500 lbs less. BMW's are heavy as hell period. Take this on a road course and it will be fun but it will eat up tires and brakes.

E30 M3 = approx 2400 lbs 1 series M = 3351 lbs. 2 completely different cars.
