Citroën DS5 revealed

New DS5 body-style is crossover/coupe-like in a way that differs from the C5 upon which it is based

We get a first look here at the upcoming Citroen DS5 ahead of its Shanghai debut tomorrow.

This is the new DS5 and, as promised by the spy photos we've previously seen, the model comes in a crossover-like body-style that differs substantially from the Citroën C5 upon which it is based.

The DS5 is a five-door hatch, with a coupe-like sloping roofline and raised driving position, that measures 4.52 m long and 1.85 m wide - still fairly compact dimensions but definitely within the mid-sized segment the DS5 will compete in.

But it is unlike most other cars in its segment with its crossover/coupe body style and perhaps that is the point of its design.

The DS5 that will debut at the Auto Shanghai comes with the PSA Group's HYbrid4 technology which features a 163 PS (120 kW) 2.0 liter diesel engine coupled to a 37 PS (27 kW) electric motor powering the rear axle.

Citroën has dressed up this DS5 with a high-end interior that also features a roof console with aircraft-like switchgear.

On the outside, you can see in the photos here the dual exhaust and the signature DS-line LED strips for the front fascia.

Check out the press release below for more details.

Citroën has revealed the eagerly anticipated third model in its innovative and distinctive DS line: DS5. Designed to express the full extent of Citroën's ‘Créative Technologie', DS5 combines ground-breaking style, rewarding driving dynamics and exceptional refinement with innovative engineering solutions.

DS5 is the first Citroën model to feature HYbrid4 diesel hybrid technology, providing enhanced performance and class leading environmental credentials. The advanced HYbrid4 system delivers 200bhp; four-wheel drive capability; emission-free electric power for the city; and an acceleration boost function for the open road - with total CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

The DS line has already redefined expectations in the supermini segment with DS3, and combines the style of a coupé and the flexibility of a five-door hatchback with DS4. Progressing to the executive segment, DS5 targets customers looking for a truly bold and assertive car with a resolutely modern approach to vehicle design.

Based on the futuristic and magical C-SportLounge concept, DS5 bringstrue technological innovation to its class.

The dynamic exterior reflects a modern expression of status and promises enhanced driving pleasure. Flowing lines, a sleek profile and muscular wheel arches - which wrap themselves around the large (16" to 19") alloy wheels - give DS5 an undoubted air of refined confidence.

The assertive front end instantly identifies DS5 as a member of the DS family. There is an oversized air intake, a large chrome-finished grille housing the chevrons and a new LED light signature. A distinguishing feature, DS5 boasts chrome-finished ‘sabre' inserts stretching from the top of each headlamp to the windscreen.

The rear design takes DS5's on-road presence to yet another level. The car stands firmly on wide tracks, emphasised by two tail pipes built into the rear bumper and highlighted by a rear signature featuring six light guides.

Citroën DS5 is equally charismatic inside, with a remarkable cabin fully consistent with the exterior styling. The driver-focused cockpit features a coupé-like driving position with a near-vertical steering wheel and a wide central console. DS5 instantly fires the imagination. An array of buttons, switches, scroll wheels and toggles are grouped on two central consoles, one low down and one above the driver's head, ‘pilot-style'. A simple push on the START button brings the interior to life. The colour Head-Up Display projects essential information into the driver's line of sight and the ambient lighting bathes the cockpit in a heady mix of red and white.

Most importantly, DS5 benefits from Citroën's expertise in quality and refinement. Each detail has been carefully considered, with premium materials such as fine-grain Club leather and exclusive designs like the ‘watchstrap' seat upholstery - a signature touch of the DS line that is unique to the market.

Reconciling fun at the wheel with comfort and practicality, DS5 opens up new horizons with pioneering architecture, including:

  • A sleek, compact body (4.52m long, 1.85m wide) and a driving position worthy of a Gran Turismo coupé.
  • A roomy boot (up to 465 litres VDA) reminiscent of a Sportwagon.
  • Five real seats, four doors and all the access and modularity of a hatchback.

For its motor show debut in Shanghai, DS5 appears in a one-off livery as the Citroën DS5 White Pearl. The cabin features ebony-coloured full-grain leather, contrasting subtly with silver-flecked overstitching. Interior detailing includes decorative inserts in Markassa ebony and a highly reflective fascia, created by applying several layers of lacquer. DS5 White Pearl also sports specially designed 20-inch alloy wheels.

This car is exceptional, considering the outlandish designs coming out France lately (e.g. current Renault Laguna).

that's not entirely true Mongo, the C4 picasso is based on the 307/C4 plaform or a modified platform thereof which is now on the New C4 and Peugeot 308, 3008, while the DS5 is based on the same Platform as the Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5.

How do you know that, if we haven't seen C4 picasso 2 (second generaton) yet. Wait and you'll see.

I'm imparting knowledge upon you, what you do with it is up to you. What I'm saying is the Platfrom Two that is on the 308/3008/5008 and New C4 is a reworked platform of the old 307/C4/C4 Picasso, now a Platform exists for the New C4 Picasso and it's the same one used by the 3008/5008/New C4 and 308, the C5 shares it's platform only with the DS5 and the 508, now these cars are clearly not the same segment/class/category as the C4 which the C4 Picasso is. But I shall wait and see, a C4 based on the C5 platform ...okay.

You are completely right. All i'm saying is somebody made up it is based on C5 (platform). And if you read press release Citroen said nothing about C5. Like someone was guessing it is based on C5, i'm guessing it will be based on C4 Picasso 2.

They really should have stuck with the stationary steering wheel hub. Very distinctive, what a Citroen should be.

according to Citroen the DS5 will have hydractive suspension ofcourse, what I am not sure is whether it will be available accross the range, I think so, considering it's gonna cost more than the C5, which only has Hydraactive on some models...

That is one sexy looking car. The best part about Citroen's DS range is that they always come up with original looking designs.

yes... it seems that the history is not a good teacher for french brands if we look at previous models like Renault Safrane, Renault Vel Satis, Citroen C6 which were huge market failures... well, sometimes sticking to your ideas could be a good thing but I don't think here it's such a good idea... anyway the car looks quite interesting but again there are so many other beautiful cars out there...

So many buttons inside. Cars these days begin to look more and more like airplanes, wonder if it's really that practical for everyday use

if this has too many buttons, what on God`s name would you say about the center console of Panamera? on the inside i really like the asimetric design of the central console, the outside as well, except the A pillar and the line that streches from the headlight to the second door...other than that, citroen really looks good in the ds line.

Why hatch again? This is supposed to be a luxurious barnd, do they really think that customers who prefer mid-size limousines will go for something odd like this?

it does look odd....in a special way though...remember though the DS is not really aimed to be a volume seller, that's what the C5, C3, and C4 are there for...
