BMW's next niche vehicle will be a smaller Gran Turismo based on the next-generation 3-Series

BMW has a pretty successful record over the last decade or so of introducing additional models that create new niches in the market but that end up selling more than at niche volumes.

Now, here is the next biggie vehicle - the 2013 3-Series Gran Turismo (GT), based on the next-generation 3-Series - spied for the first time.

The 2013 3-Series Gran Turismo is looking very much like a baby 5-Series GT, which is exactly what it is meant to be.

The prototype spied here has a much higher front end, ride height and seating position than the current batch of next-generation 3-Series prototypes we've seen and quite possibly a longer wheelbase (just as the 5-Series GT sports a longer one than on the standard 5er).

Engines expected will be an array of diesels and petrols, some completely new, that will go into the next 3-Series. A good fit will also be the new 2.0 liter turbo with an output of 245 PS/180 kW (242 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque recently introduced in the X1 xDrive28i.

The 2013 3-Series GT is expected to launch about a year after the introduction of the next-generation 3-Series due as a 2012 model.

Is BMW running out of ideas??? This GT and the 5 series GT are basura (garbage)! I dont understand how and why certain cars make it to production. BMW CS looked great and didn't make it, same for the 6 series 4-dr coupe, stiln not in production yett... but these abortions already have spy shots... C'mon Beemmer, get yourselves together...

Product introduction is a very delicate process. Delay rollout is a standard practice. 6er conv, 6er coupe then, 6er sedan for example. Never rollout at the same time. In marketing, this creates hype, gets press and brand recognition. In sales, and manufacturing, it gives consistency and a flow of sales and logistics. BMW has got it together, don't worry. Another note, judging the style of a prototype is like Paula Abdul judging on....anything, don't matter.

As usual the hate brigade is out in full force. Funny how u say these niche vehicles are garbage. You might wana read the 1st paragraph of the article again. BMW is laughing all the way to the bank with these niche vehicles while people like you try to downplay their success.

Really! BMW is laughing all the way to the bank with the 5er GT? Even if true, there's nothing funny about some of their niche products which simply look like b*stard offspring. I guess if they can't make a proper 3-series estate that they'll try the next big thing. I would have thought that the target market for this car already had viable options in the BMW model range.

5GT is a documented success. It never was designed to be a mainstream auto, but it exceeded everyone's expectations. Doesn't matter what the forums think of its looks. Because sales figures proof otherwise. Playing the niche market is necessary. BMW is always the first entrant. Audi is already following with the hatchback variants.

@ CReeds, you have no idea what niche products are meant for. that's good. and the 3 series estate is a very good car. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/newreviews/217062/bmw_3series_touring.html

I don't get the idea of this games. MB has the CLS, Audi builds A7, BMW with its 5GT and now 3GT? What's with the standard models?

The 5 series GT is a good car but it is damned ugly. Would be embarrassing if someone would see me sitting in one. if this will look like a small 5-series GT, they`d better not build it.

turbo hatch back. 20 years ago, that is a old school Saab. Believe me, there is a market for this kinda car. Abandoning hatch is one of Saab/GM's downfall.

Apparently the ugly cars sell. I for one find the 5GT interesting in the looks department. Its unique and therein lies its appeal. Alongside the X6 it stands out in the ocean of clones. I welcome more vehicles and designs to be different. Its why i have such admiration for the BMW brand.

Well the 5 series GT was vulgar, so this will no doubt follow suit.

As a BMW fan myself even i was a bit here and there about the 5 series GT styling. Hoever yesterday i saw one in the flesh and my god its a beauty. It may not shine so well in photos but in reality its really sleek and with beautiful detail. Hope this is just as good :D

Well "Boogie Woogie", I am the leader of the hate brigade and the hatred tank is rollin out heavy... Lmao. I wanted to respond earlier, but "CReeds" took the words outta my mouth. If Beemmer is laughing all the way to the bank, then make a better looking car and laugh harder. I too enjoy different and unique designs (CS, 6-coupe, X6) but these GT's just so happen to be ugly (A7 too). How could I downplay their sucess, I only think the exterior of the car is peculiar at best. I haven't discussed the BMW balance sheet at all. These forums are just to voice opinions, not to actually change the minds of the BMW design team, but if they do...Terrific!

If BMW takes into account all automobile forum, then we will end up with Hilux as people would say BMW is too pricey, pricey service, can't self maintenance, too low ground clearance, not tough interior to handle dog, need high octane and can't run on RON 88 and so on. Anyway, by time those ugly or actually acquired design will stand out (kinda like Avantime) and we begin to appreciate to have car in different shape and not only colour (as most people still choose black, silver, grey and white)

You see thats why BMW are so succesfull. Their designs evoke emotional response apart from their bread and butter ranges (1. 3, 5, 7series). We respond to these vehicles and thats what u want in this industry, to be unique. Design that challenges you, make you view things differently, stimulate the senses. I wish more manufacturers would take risks especially Audi. BTW, id have my 3GT in a diesel/electric hybrid configuration. Speaking of which, i wonder if BMW will be extending the i brand to include off-road and GT models.

So this is for people that don't really want a proper estate car...but do need an added utility of a small hatch in the rear...BUT need 4 doors because the rear seats will be frequently occupied...BUT for some reason (does not/cannot) want to (buy/cannot afford) a 5-Series/5-Series GT. This car is like a human that has no sex-organ...it's absolutely tries to be everything...but it's absolutely nothing but a car.
