Lexus LF-Gh images dropped ahead of New York show [video]

Several new images of the Lexus LF-Gh concept car made their way through the internets today following a release by the automaker.  The car, teased earlier this month by, is set to debut at the New York Auto Show next week.

A precursor to the 2012 GS, the Lexus Future Grand touring Hybrid (LF-Gh) is reportedly 4890mm in length by 1870mm wide, making it 40mm x 50mm larger than the GS.  The concept is also said to be 1450mm in height, meaning it is another 20mm taller than the car it is replacing.

As we previously reported, the LF-Gh will feature LED headlights, unique tail lighting and a large grille.  It is also expected to get a new set of side sills and a rear diffuser.

The rear-wheel drive four-seater will debut on April 19 in New York.  You can find out more about the car in the press release below.

The Lexus LF-Gh will make its global debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. The concept has been conceived as a redefinition of the luxury grand tourer, with a “clean sheet of paper” approach to design.

The aim was to produce a perfect blend of style, performance, efficiency and environmental compatibility, while introducing the benefits of advanced, new technologies. The design process has brought about a refinement and evolution of Lexus’s L-finesses design philosophy – established since 2001 – with a bolder and more distinctive projection of what a premium segment model could become. As a result, original ideas included in the new concept may migrate to future Lexus production models.

Taking the GT tradition further
The LF-Gh sees Lexus take the idea of the grand tourer saloon a step further. It has been designed as a high-performance concept that can deliver an inspiring driving experience, carrying passengers in comfort over long distances. It combines presence and emotional appeal with functionality, offering enhanced creature comforts and load space big enough to carry luggage for an extended trip.

The car’s bold, wide stance reflects its strong dynamic performance. Built on an agile, rear-wheel drive platform, it offers generous interior space for four occupants within a distinctive, long greenhouse design. The LED lighting is a clue to the range and scope of new materials, electronics and dynamic systems incorporated in the LF-Gh.

Exterior design
The front end design incorporates a spindle-shaped grille that projects a resolute look, while also contributing to efficient aerodynamics and radiator and brake duct operation. It is a key feature that will be inherited by future Lexus models.

Every line of the body is about both form and function: for example, air flows in through the front inlets next to the vertically arranged LED fog lamps, and exits through similar slim outlets at the rear that follow the curve of the tail lamps. The concept also explores how traditional features such as door mirrors and handles can be minimised to enhance overall sleekness and improve aerodynamics.

The very deep front bumper adds to the sense of movement and a low centre of gravity, while the raised bonnet line implies strong performance potential. The twin-spoke 20-inch wheels further add to the sense of driving appeal.

The concept’s increased width gave the designers an expansive canvas on which to create distinctive wraparound LED tail lamps, with intricate reflectors set behind all-red lenses. Judicious use of slim chrome trim elements in the bumper, exhaust and diffuser adds subtle quality touches.

The LED headlamps and independent L-shaped LED daytime running lights ensure the LF-Gh has a “face” like no other car on the road.

Interior design
The LF-Gh is equipped with a future Lexus interior, in which every detail has been newly scrutinised to create an environment that is driver-orientated.

The driver’s zone has a high-visibility instrument panel and a centre console that is intuitive to use. A new analogue clock with a three-dimensional face serves as a focal point for the cabin and represents another shift in Lexus’s design philosophy. The space is finished in high-quality materials with finely honed detailing, designed to respond to the demands of customers who know and appreciate true quality.

Lexus Hybrid Drive
The LF-Gh’s hybrid powertrain is denoted by its Blue LED Lexus Hybrid Drive badges in the front grille and on the bootlid. The way in which the sculpted tailpipes blend with the rear valance minimise the visual impact of the exhaust system, suggesting that the flow of exhaust gases will be substantially reduced. Overall, the concept’s design supports engineering that changes current notions of power, efficiency, safety and environmental consideration in a luxury car.

But isn't it too far for Lexus moving from deeply elegant to stranger with JDM kit? Hi Benz_man, I'm 20, but not sure this design will work for mid-size car. Lexus can do it for IS which the prev generation (Altezza) was often promoted as 18-25 years old car, but on GS? Too messy except they basically will cover the middle part of front grill with pedestrian impact (seen in Pug). Rear end is almost beauty. BMW and Merc has to prepare their facelifted version soon as this and A6 look very promising especially for CO2 content and power (Lexus hybrid with 250++hp but emission of 1.8 petrol and Audi clever 2.0TDi).

I'd be interested to find out the age of those who like this design. Definitely very space-aged, techno. But it really looks like a mess to me. It seems like a design intern went to town and channeled his inner Chris Bangle. The grill up front is a copy of Audi's. Extending from hood to splitter. Not pretty on Audi, definitely not pretty here either. BTW, Audi did it not because of function, but of brand identity. Few years back, Audi figured that everyone can recognize a BMW from afar with the kidney grills and corona lights, and not everyone can easily identify an Audi. So they started this A grill and now LED lights. The 3 round headlights is one up on BMW's 2. Which is a BMW signiture since the 70's. LED DRL or fog lights under is as trendy as a Ed Hardy shirt. High shoulder line and hofmeister kink are copies of BMW design elements. Not a fan here. Yes, it looks like a Gundam.

Lol! I enjoy proving u wrong, u hav no idea about anything. First of all lets agree that the "space-aged" "techno" design is far more youthful and exciting than anything BMW has to offer. The LF-Gh concept has three narrow bulbs that protrude in each headlight with LED's infused within each bulb, they look nothing at all like BMW rings. The kinky-like C-pillar when compared to BMW's is bigger and more curvy, less edgy, in fact it looks more like the one found on the current Lexus GS.. Am not even going to get started with the grille. Lexus family cars have a high shoulder line it has nothing to do with BMW, but more to do with L-finesse design philosophy and the fact that Lexus dimensions are mainly narrow and tall when compared to BMW. Get out of ur bubble man, Bimmer's are good but not everything revolves around them. dont b stubborn, accept challenge.

wow, I'm obviously not a Lexus fan but this looks really good. Door handles, side mirrors and a different surface treatment for the grill and this thing could be sitting on a dealer-lot. Really nice, bet it drives like top ramen though...

Looks like some crazy jap body kit on a streched current ls, looks pretty bad those headlights look like a boy racer after market special, is it just me or is the new interior looking like the current mercedes style with an angled secondary screen awkwardly comin off the main binacle? This wont put lexus back on top in the states
