New hatchback model from China automaker SAIC will be based on the Chinese-market Roewe 350

Chinese automaker SAIC is still looking to turn the MG brand into something it can take to the world market.

This MG5 Concept is the latest model in the new lineup being developed for the brand - a new hatchback meant to get a bite of that large, global Golf-class segment.

The MG5 is based on the Chinese-market Roewe 350, and will share a platform with that model as well as power plants. Those will include a 1.5 liter and 1.8 liter petrol units.

But, according to China Car Times, a turbocharged variant of that 1.5 liter engine may be exclusively available to the MG5, if it enters production. Output on the unit could fall within the 150 to 185 horsepower range with more than 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque on tap, too.

+ Acura And why is it that MG just can't get much real product to market, regardless of what entity owns the rights to the brand.

Lack of funding? You could say the same about any independent volume manufacturer: Saab, Proton and a few others. It's why there aren't many left that aren't part of Toyota, GM, VW or BMW.
