Future uncertain without new funding

We wish we could chalk this up as an April Fool's Day joke, but Saab appears to be edging closer to the financial abyss.

In Spyker's annual report, the company warned Saab's future could become uncertain if they don't secure new funding. Unsurprisingly, the Dutch firm also revealed they are hemorrhaging money as Saab is trying to setup new distribution networks and sales / marketing operations. According to Spyker, "Although this [the negative cash flow] was anticipated in the business plan, the actual cash need was higher than planned."

The latest bit of news follows a series of temporary production stoppages which were caused when suppliers refused to deliver parts over payment issues. The problems seem to have been resolved, but the suppliers are understandably cautious.

In recent months, Russian investor Vladimir Antonov has made it clear he is willing to give Saab the required funds but Spyker CEO Victor Muller has denied reports that Antonov's Conversbank is in talks to provide the Swedish brand with a new €500 ($710) million loan.

Spyker is selling its sportscar department to focus completely on the SAAB make. So I guess they will figure it out somehow.

Never a good thing when any car manufacturer is in this state. Hope the bounce back. that Koenig deal that fell through would really help right now....

Spyker isn't a too good doing brand itself, so the fact they bought Saab wasn't a guarantee things will turn out right. Let's hope at least one of the companies survives this

Get GM's influence out of it, and make Saab's great again, instead of being some glorified, warmed-up GM leftovers! When I know the car I'm driving isn't an overpriced Vauxhall, then I'll buy a Saab.

Apparently from what I've heard. Spyker, the EIB and the Swedish government aren't worried as this clause in the financial report is from the accountant. And the accountant states "there are a number of uncertainties regarding the funding of the Group, which implies that if management may not be able to generate the necessary additional funding, or adverse developments occur, the continuity of the Group will become uncertain." This doesn't mean that if Saab-Spyker doesn't get additional funding immediately that they will collapse. They have a business plan that is fully funded and will keep the company afloat until near the end of 2012. And before that date Saab hopes to have a number of new investors including Vladimir Antonov, who I might add has already applied to become a stakeholder in the company. Plus again Saab's sales haven't been all to well especially in Europe, but they've had a key model missing in Europe, the 9-5 Estate, this model has traditionally made up over 50% of 9-5 sales in Europe and also with the launch of the 9-3 sub120g TTID Estate, European sales should start to rise soon enough. Give them some time, they are still trying to separate themselves from GM. I personally think that 2012 will see a turn around for Saab, with an entirely new vehicle line up that should generate some sales...

Really, who cares if Saab goes? They've produced boring useless beige cars for over 50 years. The last interesting Saab was the Sonnet. Let them be assigned to the history books.

I certainly spotted the irony in featuring the picture of a SAAB hearse (first I've ever seen) in an article about its impending bankruptcy! SAAB is far too valuable a brand to be allowed to die off; think Volvo and you'll get my point. They're not doing too badly under GEELY are they? New products will ressurect and rejuvenate SAAB definitely. All hope is not lost, but I'm very disappointed with Spyker; all glam and no dough. D'oh!

Really, was there any other way this could go?

I knew this would happen. Spyker is a really poor mate for SAAB. They need silent partner with deep deep pockets like the Geeley or Tata uggh!
