RS4 Avant mule spotted wearing some fancy RS gear such as larger wheels and brakes

Here are the first spy shot available of an Audi RS4 Avant mule spotted during a test run.

The car shown here is based on an Audi S4 Avant but is sporting some RS4-like modifications.

This mule looks to be riding higher than a standard S4 due to the larger RS wheels from the RS5, with RS logos on the front brakes (bigger than on the S4). The front bumper has also been changed to accommodate larger air intakes. At the back is still the S4 exhaust but under the hood the car is packing something challenging, we just are not sure what that is.

We can speculate, though, and perhaps it will be a a tuned-down version of the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 rumored to be in development for the upcoming RS6 and RS7 variants. For those two models it will come with a power rating in the neighborhood of 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp). On the RS4, output may get dialed down to around the 450 to 500 PS (493 bhp / 367 kW) mark.

As for when this RS4 is due, it is hard to say. But given that Audi has put the RS6 on an expedited development track for a 2012 debut, we can hope that they're doing the same for the RS4.

The RS4 made the BMW M3 and C63 AMG slam on their ceramic brakes when it screeched into town like The Lone Ranger. Now it's back, Audi must move the game on with all body styles proposed!

If Audi cares about the NA market they must have a sedan version in the works. My guess is that it won't be powered by the 4.2 V-8. Audi rocked it with the B7-RS4 and here's an opportunity to repeat. Current model S4 is strong product so simply build off that.

@accousticjama Yeah, i know what you mean about Audi recycling the 4.3 litre V8. It was good in its day though. All in all, the RS4 is too little, too late and it'll cost a bomb. I actually think the RS3 is a better proposition: small, compact, gorgeous engine, stellar performance and more sensible price.

not much of a fan of the recent line up design of audi but damn.... this S4 Avant looks so good in sporty style... can't wait 4 the RS4 ...looking forward to an agressive front end design (like RS3) and hoping for the 3.0 litre V6 pumped up (lighter, more economical - fuel and taxes) and could mean a lighter front end (better handling)....in blue...or red...or yellow...etc

If Audi brings the RS4 Avant to the U.S., then it would almost make up for not selling the S4 Avant here.

It's all about the suspension and steering. And from what I've read about the RS5, Audi will screw it up. Hope not though. Anyway, next year will be a good time to pick up a used RS4 :)

RS4 does not get new 4.0 litre TFSI but same 4.2 litre V8 of the RS5 developing around 450 bhp. Having done the development work on the RS5, it was relatively easy to transfer the settings to the standard A4 Avant chassis. There will be no saloon version of the RS4. Given the lukewarm response to the RS5, I don't expect the RS4 to be much better. That said there should be two notable improvements. One is better steering and the other is improved ratios for the S-Tronic gearbox. If you hanker after the new 4.0 litre TFSI V8, don't worry. it'll be here by the end of the year in the S6. Developing 408 bhp, it should be a very nice car - and economical.

4.0T V8 would be very nice for RS5, less weight so better ride, more torque and less hi-revving so better fuel economy and more power and torque means better performance overall, and better usage of that good chasis! they just need a better Quattro and then improved gearbox and we have a GT-R competitor...and of course more expensive car!

My friend got a new S4 as a graduation present last year. A manual one in white with all the driving extras; drive select and the active diff. All i can say is that i was blown away- it hauls ass big time! So based on that i think the next RS will be awesome! Also turbo/ supercharged power is the way to go! The V8 in the RS5 is not as good as the 3.0T (supercharged) motor. A simple chip and its faster than the RS5.

Make it 500hp, some nice steering rack and make the front-end lighter, then we'll have a good RS4

Indeed given the recent launch of the RS3 Avant, the RS4 Avant would provide much-needed relief for Audi (I'm not) car enthusiasts.

Methinks that they'll go with a more aggressively tuned 3.0T. This engine's output is somewhat underrated by the factory in the S4. My factory contacts tell me that the 3.0T could handle in excess of 500hp. I think that Audi will want distinguishing powerplants between the RS4, RS5, and RS6. It's a little too AMGish to use one engine for everything.

First RS4 had TT 2.8 V6 with 280kw so I think they can dial up the S4 unit to over 300kw. Can't wait for this
