Highly modified Corvette Z06 crashes at Texas Mile [video]

American tuner Hinson Motorsport converts the Z06 into a 1,428 bhp monster only to have it crash

A highly-modified Corvette Z06 has crashed while trying to set a record at the Texas Mile high speed event.

The video shows the crash filmed from a safe distance as the car does several tumbles as it decelerates in chaotic style from 230 mph (370 km/h) to finally coming to a stop on its wheels again.

Fortunately the driver was unhurt and walked away from the scene.

The Z06 was from Hinson Motorsport which saw fit to tune the car into a 1,428 bhp (1065 kW / 1448 PS) monster. Oddly, it features a rear-mounted twin-turbo system. But you don't have to be a physicist to figure over 1,400 horses may just be too much power for the aerodynamics to handle. The thing doesn't even have a rear wing.

Below is a video of the same car doing a 214 mph (344 km/h) run last October.

I believe the driver clambered out of the 'Vette unhurt; that's what matters most! Thank God for that!! This proves the Americans are sick and tired of European exotics walking away with all the accolades and encomiums and are doing something about it in spectacular style. Ambition has a price.

Isn't the plural "encomia"?

I don't know the full facts about what happened but a guy driving a tuned Corvette with over 1400 horsepower and no rear wing is an absolute gob**ite if you ask me! I'd be very surprised if the tyres didn't explode at those speeds..

glad he's ok! but on another note, I never heard of rear mounted turbos before. I guess they were too big to be stuffed under the bonnet... as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of all inventions

droid check out STS turbo systems, google it they make rear mounted turbo systems for a lot of late model vehicles. Also, I'm not sure what a gob**ite is but in my book a guy driving a modified Vette that is not intended to be driven that fast and he goes over 230mph that makes him have the biggest set I have ever seen. Way more fun and interesting than watching James May drive a Bugatti at speed like he's sitting at his office desk playing Need For Speed.

Looks like it was in need of a big spoiler. Reminds me of the K?nigsegg in the Top Gear episode.

My guess is the one of the tires must have exploded. Cause for even the Buggati they have special compound tires for high speed runs. So the rear tires must have gotten too hot and exploded, in the video it clearly shows the rear just lifts off the ground at the end of the run

I believe that the Bugatti tire set runs around $15,000 USD too and they are made special at the factory and tested like jet aircraft wheels are.
