Spy shots show next-generation 911 doing some testing on the N?rburgring ahead of its Frankfurt debut later this year

Here's a great set of spy shots of the upcoming 2012 Porsche 911 conducting what is likely one of its final rounds of testing on the Nürburgring.

The shots here show the next-generation 911 (998) with that adjustable rear spoiler both in action and at rest. This prototype is also sporting very little camouflage, with just a little masking around the eyes.

Relatively speaking, the next 911 gets a substantially redesigned body than the current 997 model. It's bulkier and rounder rear-end and stretched wheelbase give it a definitive new look. The car will be 56 mm longer than the current 911, with a wheelbase also stretched by 10 mm, and will be 11 mm shorter in height too.

Base engine will be a 3.4 liter Boxer engine with an output of 350 PS (257 kW / 345 bhp). The next Carrera S gets a 3.8 liter unit with 400 PS (294 kW / 395 bhp).

The 2012 Porsche 911 will be making its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The side profile pic shows that this car is lower than the 997....it looks great (even if it very much the same as the 997). I would love a Carrera 4S with PDK transmission....then upgrade to a Turbo S.

Those rear back lights dont look any different to the current 997. I did read somewhere that the brake lights shown on the test cars arent the actual lights for the car, they will be changed just before its shown in september

If you look at that first image in Hi-Res, you can just see the actual car's LEDs shining under the dummy stickers.

The 911 that doesn't fill you with dread, but street cred! Sexier than ever. If only that air-cooled bark could return...

Based on the recent spy photos shot at some petrol station, I suspected this upcoming 998 should be slightly bigger than the current model. The design of the wing mirrors somehow resembles the 993 type.

Is that side air-intake looking thing a sticker?

Yup. When the shape is still recognisably 911, you want to give away as little of the exterior details as you can so people can't decipher what it really looks like. A pretend Turbo intake might hide a new curve, or it might just be to throw people off the scent. Clearly it failed!

Definitely looks longer and sleeker. I like the less-upright windscreen.

The benchmark will once again show just how superior Porsche is to the pretenders.

It's a 2013 911 that will be the new model, and it's 991, not 998.
