Porsche planing a new supercar - report
Porsche 918 RSR, 1600, 10.01.2011

Would battle the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo

Following last month's report that Porsche was considering a supercar to slot between the 911 GT2 RS and 918 Spyder, new information is starting to emerge about the secretive model.

Envisioned to battle the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Gallardo, the car would reportedly feature a lightweight carbon fiber body and a suspension that borrows heavily from existing models. Nothing is official, but a "senior source" told Autocar the front suspension would likely mimic the 911's, while the rear would be an enlarged version of the Cayman's setup.

No word on what would power the new supercar, but the mid-mounted twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat six from the GT2 RS that develops 620 PS (462 kW / 612 hp) would be sufficient to say the least.

Porsche is set to make a decision on production later this year. If approved, the company would reportedly target sales of 2,500 to 3,000 units annually.

So it's just (another) 911 then! Better this than a smaller cayene or panamera.

Not quite as this is mid engined. Shame then that it's getting a flat 6 rather than a V8 which is what it really needs to head of the 458 and McLaren. I think this is all speculation anyway...

No it will not be another 911. It says that the new car will be mid-engined meaning light years ahead of any 911 more like a Cayman Turbo RS. This is sounds absolutely brilliant. Would have preferred a normally aspirated engine or the engine from the Panamera Turbo

the GT2 RS wipes the floor with the 458 , even the GT3 RS beats it on twisty tracks. the MP4 is the current performance benchmark and the car to beat. and all the haters should thank the Cayenne and Panamera for making this new supercar a reality.

@WCF User: Who said it's getting a flat 6? That's just what WCF is speculating. IMO, I hope it gets a flat engine. A flat 6 would be great, but ideally, a flat 8 would be awesome! Naturally aspirated too. Boxer engines are so much better than conventional configuration engines.

They should just focus on bringing out a flat four, affordable, Porsche based sports car. It would sell in huge volume. Porsche can't compete against that well in the supercar market. The 959 wasn't up to its rivals in speed and acceleration. Porsche can't afford to produce an all-out car. These things are un-compromised with plenty of everyday wrinkles. If a Pagani has such wrinkles, no one really cares. If a "Porsche" does, then the whole brand image is tarnished.

what are you talking about, probably you don't even know how capable 959 still is!!!! you should do a research for yourself so you won't ever again talk about legendary 959 as you did now!

@ v6s_stink, you should google 959 once again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7b6QG3VZqA

Porsche must consider the 959 revival...that would be sensible since all others are doing the same!

In a way, the 918 IS a 959 revival. After the 959 came (a technological MARVEL), a few years later came the GT Evolution/GT1 roadcars, then another few years later, the Carrera GT. Now a few years after the Carrera GT, Porsche shows the 918, which, like the 959, is a symbol of what Porsche can accomplish technologically.

This car is unnecessary. Now that Porsche has Panamera & Cayanne, the 911 should be a mid engine 2 seater.

hahahahah!! Ya right. You obviously have no clue what a 911 is if you think it should be a mid engined two seater.

Its well overdue. Porsche has been making too many affordable 4 seater 4 door small engined ugly cars. For such a revered sportscar marque, they should have done this years ago. Hope it gets the twin turbo V8.

$300k to $845k, for sure there is a gap or two for supercars there.

my guess is a base version, a GTS version and a turbo version to fill the gaps.

I think this car was built years ago by RUF. Its a longer cayman with the back window filled with louvers like the lotus exige.

The 918 is so fu***** stupid. Who the hell cares about fuel economy in a hypercar? It gives you what, like 100hp for 20 miles or something stupid like that? That has got to be the dumbest move ever. And 845k? If I had to keep the cars and drive them, I would rather have a GT3 @ 20% of the price

This has to be the dumbest comment I've read in a while. First of, the 918 was engineered to dominate at the highest level of motor racing. Second, the year is 2011! Throwing a shiet load of fuel into an engine and claiming that you've build a fast car is really not that special anymore. Give it a few years; the 918 will be the car that all cars will be build after!

"The 959 wasn't up to its rivals in speed and acceleration" are you serious? 959 Sport could do 0-60 in 3.6s, which as far as I recall, wasn't even beaten by the 997 gen I Turbo with Tiptronic S as it did 0-60mph in 3.7s! The first production Porsche to actually beat 959 0-60 time was 997 Turbo gen II, a car that has a PDK gearbox vs manual and is 25 years younger! Now guess who stinks :D

Please make it Porsche and quash the rumours!! It would be the only true competition for the 12C and reliability to boot unlike the Italian garbage...

An intelligently designed 911 with 918 cues. Neat. Porsche's very reputation could rest on this car!
