Corvette advert takes a jab at BMW, Ferrari and Porsche [video]

Ad boasts about how Corvette had to reduce power on its ZR1 in order to compete in the ALMS 12 hrs of Sebring

Corvette has put out this ad which aired in the United States boasting about how it had to reduce the power on the ZR1 to be fair to the competion - namely BMW, Ferrari and Porsche.

The ad ran on the ABC Sports channel last Sunday during a rerun of the ALMS 12 Hours of Sebring race. Chevrolet, which sponsored the re-telecast, laments in the commercial about how it had to dial back power on the ZR1's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 (638 bhp / 476 kW / 647 PS) by more than 100 horses in order to compete.

Well, races have rules in place to make the competition fair. But we can forgive Corvette for using the opportunity to crow about how much power its range-topper has.

What they fail to mention, though, is what any American car company would be loath to on U.S. national television. That is, actually, it was a French car maker, Peugeot, that won the event. (Le Mans is still a town in France.)

And two BMWs still came in ahead of Corvette in the GT class.

Horsepower...the only thing Chevy can brag about. Give BMW or Porsche a supercharged 6.2 V8 to work with..I bet it'll pump out a helluva lot more than 638 horsepower.

I thought the new 530 horsepower 911 turbo beat the ZR 1 in one of the recent car magazines. How would the new Nissan GT R compete?

I don't get it I mean do they really think BMW, Ferrari or Porsche engineers can't make more powerful engines? That argument is incredibly stupid and even worse it's aparently amazing engineering can't get them to win the race.

Imaging that BMW is Working on a 6.2 V8.. Well how about Porsche ?? 911 turbo is less than 4 liters. Come on Cheve relax. ZR1 is a great car, but not comparable with any German brand. its simply a different story

I can understand them making fun of BMW & Ferrari because they are both laughable but Porsche? No car manufacturer in the world can make fun of Porsche. Porsche is the King.

Perhaps in ALMS, this TV advert would ring well with US consumers. What about the world? People would probably chose premium sports cars such as Audi (R8 variants), Lamborghini model lineup, Porsche (911, upcoming 918 Spyder), Pagani (Zonda & Huayra) BMW (M3), Maserati (GT versions), Mercedes (SLS, AMG variants) and the list goes on and on. Furthermore, not every country has a corvette in the local model lineup, which resulted in a lack of brand awareness for the sports car.

its a matter of preference. And what kinda driver you are. Hardcore drivers love cars like this. If you are an old fart fiat panda driver who needs all the driving aids and gizmos offered by the euro stuff then of course you would opt for those. But if you just wanna have a good blast down a highway/racetrack with 600+ horse. i like this car. And it does it for a fraction of the price of its competitors.

The Viper has been using less power for more than 10 years, nice of the Corvette to catch up! Now if only the rest of the world can make a true Supercar!

This statement just doesn't make sense to me. Reducing power for what competition? I mean BMW reduces to three cylinders to increase efficiency. But reduce power for a competition? What's the joke?

I dont know how Chec can dare compare them selves to BMW Porsche. their Build quility is by far new the Germans and so they built a same boring vette with a power booast, yawn. I'd much rather buy a car that I know will be controlable, long lasting and low maintence. this jab to the Germans is more like a hit with a feather, no damage but more laughter

Corvette Zr1 is a real drivers car. Its not an overpriced piece of junk that breaks down all the time and needs more maintenance than Charlie Sheen's goddesses. Ill gladly take one and wipe the floor with the euro "competition" for a fraction of the cost.

The biggest disappointment in Chevy's finest is that plastic booty so elastic you can push it in so far it'll pop back out! The interior quality mark was dialled back considerably too! Europe's finest trio must be laughing their pistons off!

Hold on, lol, didn't BMW scored a 1-2 in ALMS with the M3 and whip the "detuned" Vette which is then supposed to be running under less strain than....oh no Chevy FAIL.
