BMW developing a new family of 3-cylinder turbo engines that will go into the next-generation MINI

BMW has announced that it wants to expand its TwinPower turbo technology to smaller displacement engines, including 4-cylinder and 3-cylinder power plants.

TwinPower technology features twin-scroll turbocharging coupled with direct-injection and variable valve management (the Valvetronic system) that delivers greater output and efficiency from a smaller engine.

The technology debuted back in 2009 on the 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder gasoline unit fitted to the 5-Series GT. The technology is also used on other models and larger displacement power plants.

Back in January, BMW introduced the X1 xDrive28i with a new 2.0 liter turbocharged engine featuring the TwinPower turbo system. That power plant has an output of 245 PS/180 kW (242 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. For the all-wheel drive X1 xDrive28i, fuel-economy is 7.9 liters/100 km on the EU test cycle.

We've heard rumblings for a while now that BMW is developing a 3-cylinder engine, which it now says will also get TwinPower technology. BMW is working on a range of 3-cylinder engines that will power the next-generation MINI as well as new entry-level compact BMWs.

BMW plans on both diesel and petrol/gasoline 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder units as being its highest volume engine groups. That family of engines will go into about 1.5 million vehicles a year by 2015.

I also think that 3-sylinder engines sound nice ;D. I somehow like the idea that there is less parts and less weight in smaller engines with less sylinders. Don't get me wrong I also love a good V8 ;D

The three cylinder makes a lot of sense for small cars aiming to get good mileage. The balance can be perfect in all three planes and all vibrations canceled with only one small balance shaft. The exhaust notes can be wonderful. Listen to a modern Triumph motorcycle. Power density and efficiencies can be optimized. Torque can flat out rock compared to the same displacement in an inline four. V6's still and always will stink, physics are.

Anything will be better than the disastrous N54 engine.Even if these engines are as unreliable & flawed as the N54 was,I am sure BMW will still be BUYING awards from various magazines & organisations for this engine. 1 of these days Audi are going to solve their weight & steering issues & BMW is going to be in very serious trouble.

Weight? Audi is already lighter than its german competitors, due to their use of aluminium through out the product line.

Strange that the N54 has so many issues in the US and none in the UK and Europe..........

could be the "watered down" petrol they use across there. My E39 530i runs like an absolute pig when running on 95RON fuel, but runs an absolute dream on 97,98 or 99RON. Maybe the lower rating is messing with the fuel sensors and the pump. *shrug* I'm no mechanic, but it's certainly a possibility.
