Porsche 918 price anounced at $845k - bundled with special 911 Turbo S
Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder 21.03.2011

Porsche tries to bundle two special edition models by offering customers who order the 918 to also purchase the limited series 911 Turbo S

Porsche has announced it will be taking orders on the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid which it hopes to produced in a limited run starting in 2013.

Porsche would like to begin production in September 2013 on a limited series of 918 units at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant in Germany.

Starting prices in the United States will be $845,000. In Europe prices start at €645,000, subject to VAT and country-specific charges.

In order to spur sales, Porsche is bundling the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid with the special edition 911 Turbo S. Only customers who order a 918 Spyder will also be able to get their hands on the limited series 911 Turbo S, in coupe or cabriolet form.

The 911 Turbo S "Edition 918 Spyder" begins deliveries in June in Europe. In Germany, the Coupé version is priced at €173,241 Euro and the Cabriolet at €184,546. The Coupé and Cabriolet are priced at $160,700 and $172,100, respectively, in the United States. And in the UK the Coupé costs £125,865 and £133,553 as a Cabriolet.

Details on the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid are still sketchy. Porsche says it will come with a mid-rear mounted V8 displacing "more than 4.0 liters" producing around 500 PS (368 kW / 493 bhp). Two electric motors, one on each axle, will add 160 kW / 218 PS to that output total and making the 918 Spyder an all-wheel drive supercar. Transmission will be the seven-speed double-clutch PDK.

The 918 Spyder will do the 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint in just 3.1 seconds and will have a top speed of 199 mph (320 km/h).

A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery provides the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid with a range of around 16 miles (26 km) in electric mode and with a top speed over a limited distance of 94 mph (151 km/h).

Consumption will be impressive for a car with over 700 horses. Porsche claims the 918 Spyder will sport a 3.0 liters/100 km fuel-economy rating and CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km (112 g/mile).

Porsche's Plug-In Hybrid 918 Spyder Goes from Dream to Reality

Now available for ordering, the 918 Spyder will feature cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology and stunning performance, forever changing the future of the super sports car

ATLANTA, March 21, 2011 - After outstanding customer response to the concept car first shown at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, Porsche today announced that dealers around the world will begin taking 918 Spyder customer orders. This is a significant step toward actual production of the company's next super sports car, a Porsche that marries unique plug-in hybrid technology and outstanding performance in a visually stunning and purely Porsche package.

The 918 Spyder will feature a high revving 500-plus horsepower V8 engine assisted by two electric motors with a total of at least 218 horsepower, yet Porsche estimates it will consume only 3.0 L/100 km based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Official EPA fuel economy figures or estimates will be announced just before the first customer cars begin arriving in the United States near the end of 2013.

To ensure the 918 Spyder's worldwide exclusivity, Porsche will produce no more than 918 examples. Start of production at Porsche's famed factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen is planned for Sept. 18, 2013 (9/18), and the U.S. base manufacturer's suggested retail price is $845,000 (excluding destination and handling charges).

With its design inspired by past Porsches like the Carrera GT super sports car and the legendary 917 and highly successful RS Spyder race cars, the 918 Spyder remains faithful to the 2010 concept car. Unlike the concept car, the two-seat production version, based on a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque, will feature a manual roof system with removable panels that can be stored in the front luggage compartment.

Super high performance with very low fuel consumption and emissions

The 918 Spyder will be powered by a unique plug-in hybrid system that will include a high-revving, mid-mounted V8 engine with capacity of more than 4.0 liters and producing at least 500 horsepower. The engine will be based on the Porsche RS Spyder racing engine that demonstrated its impressive performance and efficiency through multiple Michelin Green X Challenge victories in the American Le Mans Series, the Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via Porsche's compact, seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch gearbox.

Two electric motors - one each on the front and rear axles - together will provide approximately 218 additional horsepower. This configuration also will offer an innovative, variable all-wheel drive system with independent control of the drive forces on both axles. Electrical energy will be stored in a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that can be recharged from a standard household outlet. Electric-only driving range is expected to be more than 16 miles on the NEDC. Recharge time will depend on each country's electrical power network, but charging is expected to take about seven hours at 110V/10A in the United States. A quick-charge option is being evaluated to further reduce charging times.

With anticipated combined fuel consumption of just 3.0 L/100 km on the NEDC, this equates to CO2 emissions of only 70 g/km or 112 g/mile. On the other hand, the Porsche 918 Spyder will deliver super sports car performance. It is estimated that the final production version will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds on its way to an estimated top track speed of 199 mph. It should also tackle Germany's famed Nurburgring Nordschleife in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds, two seconds faster than the Porsche Carrera GT. Under the right conditions, the 918 Spyder will be able to drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 94 mph for limited distances.

Customers who order the 918 Spyder also have the opportunity to acquire a special-edition 911 Turbo S Coupe or Cabriolet. Also limited to no more than 918 units, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder will have exterior and interior design elements echoing the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder supercar's styling. It features similar exterior colors, carbon-fiber elements inside and out, enhanced leather equipment and numerous acid-green accents on items such as the brake calipers, illuminated sill plates, interior stitching and instrument cluster needles. A limited-edition badge on the glove compartment door will feature the same production number as the customer's 918 Spyder.

Worldwide 918 Spyder customers can begin ordering this special edition 911 Turbo S sports car today, and customer deliveries will start later in 2011. The U.S. base manufacturer's suggested retail prices for the Coupe and Cabriolet versions are the same as the standard 911 Turbo S models, $160,700 and $172,100 respectively, excluding destination.

$845,000 makes the BMW i8's $242,680 look like a bargain!

catchmyshadow- inform yourself a little more about the BMW i8 before making a dumbfounded comment like that. I love the Porsche too, but the i8 is far from "average" and just as much of a technological masterpiece in its own right.

Let's put "BMW" and "technological masterpiece" in the smae sentence when a complete and soundly tested production version is available. I for one have my doubts as to just how clever it will be.

Somehow, it makes me think about Porsche cheapening its products proposition, despite its expensive price tag. A buy-one-get-one-free sort. But it is better off than the Aston Martin one-77 cum (Toyota IQ) Cygnet deal.

"Porsche claims the 918 Spyder will sport a 3.0 liters/100 km fuel-economy rating and CO2 emissions of just 70 g/km (112 g/mile)." Over exactly what distance will this car get the 3.0L/100km? With an electric only range of 26km that 368 kW / 493 bh 4.0L V8 is going to need to be one amazingly economical motor! Can or will this car actually be able to drive 100km non-stop and average 3.0L/100km?

this fuel consumption will be able to drive just on electric motors while internal combustion engine will idle to fill the generators! in that mode the top speed is around 60km/h! as soon as you get past that number the gasoline engine will start revving higher and the consumption will be higher :) it's a marketing trick, but anyway yes it is true that 3liter of gasoline will use that engine to almost idle to fill the electric engines :)

Well this is certainly right - if you drive at walking speed. If you give full throttle, this car will consume only slightly less than any other car with a powerful V8 engine, I guess. Overall, I liked the Carrera GT more and I'd still take the Turbo S over its own counterpart of the bundle.

this car should be without electric engines, instead of those 2 I would rather advice them 2 turbochargers :) 700hp would be right in the teritory of the new Aventador and Huayra and also without electricity it would be lighter and less complex! Porsche please do it without electricity?

A 'bundled' Turbo S?? What a crazy move, and in 2013 when the 918 arrives, will this 'bundled' and entirely non hybrid Turbo S be as appreciated given the fact that it will be an old generation 911? A new 911 is being released in 2012! Porsche are definitely in need of money, seemingly however they can get it. So many special editions lately, its getting absurd.

other carmakers claim more than 200mph and don`t really achieve it, Posche says 199mph but i am sure it will be more than 200mph in reality.

it's supposed to be a track day car.. and there aren't many tracks where you can get to 200 mph.. and anyways Porsche doesn't really care about top speeds.. but even i'll admit atleast 200 will be nice..
