Audi commercial highlights A6's aluminum frame [video]

'Manipulation' ad looks to distinguish the A6 from the competition by focusing on its aluminum-based construction

Here's an ad that Audi has put out, called 'Manipulation', on the new A6 model highlighting the sport sedan's aluminum-intensive construction.

Audi is, of course, keen to point out this distinguishing feature of the A6 that sets it apart from the competition, as well as it's baby-brother the A4.

The A6 is built on a new aluminum-intensive chassis riding on steel springs, with an adaptive air suspension available as an option too. That makes for a sprightly curb weight of just 1,575 kg (3,472.28 lbs).

The A6 is based on a front-wheel drive architecture but also offers Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive technology on certain variants. The Quatro system on the A6 comes with a 40:60 rear bias and torque-vectoring as well as an optional sport differential. All together, those features add up to a supple ride for this mid-sized premium model going up against the likes of the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The 2012 Audi A6 is available now in Europe with prices in Germany starting at €38,500.

The thing is that this is just creating perception that they are technologically advanced, which is not in fact the case. The Audi A6 frame is actually steel because what they have learnt is that with an alu frame, the car structure is extremely weak although it is light weight. This is the exact reason why BMW refused to use alu even though it is cheaper and lighter. Furthermore, check the weight diff between 5 and A6, they are almost the same. The use of high tech terms to create an image of techno advancement is not really a credible act. Every single premium car maker today make use of a combination of metal to make their frames to achieve a desired outcome. But Audi like to put a nice name to it so that ignorant consumers can be fooled to think that it is something outside this world (e.g. Space Frame - just an alu frame that is cheaper to make and lighter and weaker, and this Hybrid thing now - just a combination of metal to make the frame, which is used by all manufacturers anyway)

Audi are a car COMPANY (emphasis on COMPANY). if they use savvy marketing to draw in more customers and take customers away from Mercedes and BMW then they are a better COMPANY, and whether you or i like or not, that's the bottom line. also aluminium is not weak, which is why they use it in aircraft and space shuttles - no cost in strength but a reduction in weight. it's generally not cheap either because it's a much harder metal to work with - though the raw metal itself may be inexpensive. i don't like the new A6 (or the old A6 for that matter), and despite being an Audi owner i'd almost certainly have a new 5-Series (or more likely a Jag XF over both of them) but your arguments don't really make much sense.

very sexy and clever, but, for the general public, after the oohs and ahhs, they will wonder if this aluminum is strong enough for a car.

Beautifull commercial, but...... naah still think the design is too boring and too much the same over and over again...

It has to be mentioned, that the A6 has NO aluminium frame, even if the commercial suggests that! There are just some parts of the body which are made of aluminium, which is nothing really new. The main frame is made of steel. It also has to be said that the weight of the new A6 is not that low compared to its competitors. Curb weight (EU standard): A6 2.0 TDI: 1650 kg BMW 520d: 1695 kg Audi A6 3.0 TDI: 1720 kg BMW 525d: 1765 kg A6 2.8 FSI: 1685 kg BMW 523i: 1700 kg Audi A6 3.0 TFSI: 1815 kg BMW 535i: 1760 kg

The 3.0 tdi and 3.0 tfsi has quattro (+100kg), and are still competative. Before you had to choose between grip or weight, now you don?t.

 kenvo3 kenvo3
The 3.0 TDi with 1720 kg has FWD, no Quattro. The 535i xDrive weighs 1840 kg, that's just 25 kg more than the 3.0 TFSI. All I want to say is, that this "lightweight campaign" by Audi is exaggerated when you compare the weight of the A6 with its competitors.

honest question: audi and bmw use different types of awd system, so is this a big factor when considering the weight of each cars?

@kenvo3 yeah, talking about exaggerating. "Manipulation" of exaggeration..as the commercial ad name suggested.

@kenvo3, No, all Audis with more powerful engines got Quattro as standard. The 3.0Tdi is one of them. Only the 4 cylinders got FWD.

I found, 2011 A6 3.0 TDI FWD 1645kg, BMW 2011 525d M 1765kg. Dimensions, A6 4.915m x 1.874m, 5er 4.899m x 1.86m. So the A6 is marginally bigger but 120kg lighter. Sources: Audi and BMW websites. Think your figures are wrong.

@NewGit: No, my figures are right. I took the Audi figures from the German Audi Website (they are identical to the German A6 catalogue). I don't know where you got your data from, but it's possible that your local Audi website doesn't use the EU specification of curb weight.

VW/Audi has a HISTORY of fooling c0cks into buying their cars. They prefer to blow smoke by talking about HOW they make their cars, rather than talking about WHAT their cars can actually do. Let's look back... VW Passat W8. Sounds awesome.. 4.2L in a "small sedan". They raved about it forever, how it was such a tech marvel. At the same time, Mercedes was stuffing 5.4L V8 into SLKs... quietly. Worse, the W8 had slower acceleration than some of the V6s of its times, like the Infiniti G35. Now they are parading around about the A6... come on. Stop the game Audi.

Let's look back at some of other crimes Audi has commited. Remember the 2.8L V6? The one with 5-valves per cylinder.. they talk about dominating BMW 328i with it. Blabbed about how superior it was to the competition's 4-valve per cylinder. Bahahaha. Not even close. It couldn't even beat 325i.. and in reality, was more on part against 323i.

Manipulation says it best. However, auto journalists who have tested it (Motoring Trend) noted a much lighter feel in contrast to previous version.

There are few reasons why "BMW Fan-boys" are talking down on Audi's. First is probably just trash talk. Second, it is because people who know cars, really don't see Audi as a equal. Disclaimer - I am not going to talk down Audi's, but Audi is definitely no equal to BMW in terms of technology, engineering, or material science. And what I mean by "people who know about cars", I mean people who knows more, and has access to more information than a regular consumer with car magazines. Audi put together a nice vehicle, and just that. Audi engineers have their hands tied more often than BMW's, due to the inherant ties with VW. BMW without question, has more ground breaking and fresh ideas. Audi marketing has tremendous success as of late. But behind all the fancy LED headlights and comparative marketing, it is still second rated, NOT equal. The gap is closer than before, but no equal. The old A6 had a terrible weight distribution of 57% nose heavy. This one better be a big improvment. If you Audi "fanboys" really see that Audi is equal or better than BMW or MB, let me ask you this. How come they don't engineer their cars 50:50? We all know is ideal, is on their race cars, is with BMWs,lotus', Ferraris. Does Audi think it is uncessary? Do they think it is overachievement? Or they simply called it a day once they achieved 57% and shift focus on the headlights instead? Or commericials with alum frames?

Well i agree that Audi doesn't have 50:50 weight distribution in its entire range of cars. Any car that has an engine and transmission in the front of coarse has to be nose heavy those are basic laws of physics. Which is why Audi has come up with a solution of putting the steering rack ahead of the front axle, and given the new Quattro system 20% torque bias to the rear wheels. Let me put it in terms you understand Mr. ClintonM3, most Audi Quattro models come with 40:60 torque distribution front to rear, together with the revised steering rack position that eliminates that nose heavy feeling you were talking about. Am an Audi fan-boy. Come back!

ClintonM3: I dislike Audi fanboys, but fit & finish wise, design wise, Audi smokes BMW. No comparison, sorry. Hence why Audis are for people that are in it for the show.

This is certainly the most handsome and technologically advanced A6 to date. I have seen one in the flesh and it's simply beautiful, certainly more than a worthy competitor to the 5er or E-class. It's sad that this forum has degenerated into one big hater, vile dribble love-fest.

ALuminium or not it's far from light. The previous 550i weighed 1635kg according to bmw, now the 523i weighs allready 1700 kg. What a shame.
