Racing legend Walter R?hrl drives the classic 1964 Porsche Carrera GTS [video]

904 GTS borrowed from Porsche museum gets to show its mettle on the track

Here's a video featuring German racing legend Walter Röhrl borrowing a 1964 Carrera (904) GTS from the Porsche museum for a little joyride around the track.

Röhrl was a top World Rally Championship driver in the 70s and 80s, having won the Monte Carlo Rally four times driving for four different marques - a true achievement.

The 1964 904 GTS, officially called the Porsche Carrera GTS and produced between 1964-1965, featured a highly advanced flat-four cylinder power plant with an output of 201 PS (148 kW / 198 bhp).

In the video you get to hear that sound of old when sports cars had a certain charming off-kilter grumble to them that the more sonically-precise supercars of today just don't have.

Also, the agility shown by the car, thanks to Röhrl's effortless piloting, makes it one of those rare classic models that look like they could be as much fun to drive as any far more advance machine of today.

"...flat-four cylinder power plant"??? Then why has a 4 cylinder engine 6 carburetors?

Check out the Wiki article on the 904. I never heard of triple barreled Webers either.

It is two 3-choke Webber carburetors. http://www.collectibles-articles.com/antique/PORSCHE-46-IDA-3C-WEBER-CARBURETTORS-CARBS-911-ITALIAN_220713334886.html

Could be right about the 3 choke carbs, but count the spark plugs and it?s definitely 3 of them on the head at 0:11. Hence, it?s a flat 6.

That is beautiful. I think the back looks like a Ferrari 250 GTO, and the front has a lot of old Maserati in it.

The 904 was a great sports car in its time, with a really great-sounding engine, too.

This guy drove the original Audi Quattro; sick driver! Great drive of the 904, one of the all-time great Porsches. He could make Tiff Needel of Fifth Gear look like an apprentice behind the wheel!
