Saab to build bespoke platform - report
Saab PhoeniX concept live in Geneva - 01.03.2011

Will underpin the next-generation 9-3

According to a recent report, the 2012 Saab 9-3 will ditch the Epsilon platform for a completely new Phoenix architecture.

Details are limited, but Autocar says the platform is highly adaptable and will be able to accommodate vehicles which measure from 4.2 to 5.5 meters long. It is reportedly being developed with the assistance of Scania, who is helping the company create a "future-proof" platform which can be easily upgraded over several generations without significant re-engineering. Furthermore, insiders tell the magazine the architecture will underpin the replacements for the 9-5 and 9-4X.

More specifically, the platform will feature a unique MacPherson strut arrangement and a new "race-car style" five-link rear axle. It remains to be seen what this implies, but everything appears quite promising.

If everything goes according to plan, the new platform will debut in the next-generation 9-3 when it is launched in October 2012.

Yay! Let those extremly competent Saab ingenieurs work their magic. Nice that they get help from Scania. Keep it in the family :)

Finally, a breath of fresh air - following all that depressing bankruptcy talk . . . .

I like Muller's enthusiasm and hopefully SAAB can see this plan through. Hopefully they will have enough money to stay afloat.

Saab is a unique brand and i believe there's a bright future ahead for it. Lets be optimistic.`I wasn't very pleased with the new 9-5 but the Phoenix concept shows that there will be something better in the future. I cant wait to see that highly anticipated new 9-3 in 2012. Its good that Scania is helping out too.

The 9-5 is still a GM product in the end. The new 9-3 will the "first" all-Saab car.

The new 9-5 is a piece of shit. I've driven it, absolutely disgusted with it and the atrocity of it wearing a SAAB badge. Oversized malibu for 20k more, thanks but no thanks. The new 9-3 seems promising but i think i'm gonna wait for the next gen 9-5. It needs about a 6" lower center of gravity, 400lbs less in weight, less cheap GM plastic inside, a pioneer or bose sound system. As far as the engine goes id like to see a 3.5L inline 6 with direct injection/ignition with a bi-turbo setup and 390-400hp in the Aero, coupled with a 6spd manual and AWD. Now that would be a SAAB.

radmeister... Well put man! That is the type of 9-5 Saab needs to make. It'll be good to see an all Saab car instead of an american car with a Saab badge on it.

This is good news, for Saab and its (I'm not) fans. I hoped with fresh optimism, the Swedish car marque would reclaim its crown of technological innovations and achievements.

Spyker supercar stardust is starting to sprinkle onto SAAB machines. The 9-3 is a crucial car for SAAB and this is great news of relief to their engineers and designers. Hail the PhoeniX!
