The Chevrolet Volt is one of the most significant cars in decades, but its $41,000 price tag is certainly steep for a pint-sized four-seater.
Thankfully, help could be on the way as a new report is indicating the company is developing an entry-level model which would likely eschew the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery for something smaller and cheaper. Details are limited, but the 'baby' Volt would reportedly cost $31,000 (before government incentives) and only be able to travel 20 miles (31 km) on electricity alone - as opposed to the current range of 25 to 50 miles (40 to 80 km).
While the proposed distance isn't anything to write home about, it would be competitive with the Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid (15 mile / 24 km) and Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid (12.5 miles / 20 km). More importantly, the revised Volt would likely be able to match both those vehicles on price (or least come close).
