Inching closer to production

Just days after the i3 was spied in Scandinavia, the BMW i8 has turned up in the Arctic Circle.

Caught wearing sky-inspired blue and white camouflage - as opposed to the traditional black and white getup - the i8 prototype looks virtually identical to the Vision EfficientDynamics concept which debuted at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite the similarities, the prototype has a repositioned third brake light and a revised rear fascia with an integrated diffuser.

While the production model is slated to use a petrol engine, the VED concept featured a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel engine and two electric motors that produced 262 kW (356 PS / 351 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. This enabled the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), and averge 3.76 L/100 km (63 mpg US). More importantly, thanks to plug-in hybrid technology, the Vision EfficientDynamics could travel up to 50 km (31 miles) on electricity alone.

The BMW i8 is scheduled to be launched in 2013 and is rumored to cost approximately £150,000 (€175,285 / $242,680).

EV range suffers greatly in low temperature conditions, so cold weather testing is going to be very important for these cars.

I've been looking at this car for years now and to be totally honest I'm bored with it now. BMW should either make it or bin it, D-day has been and gone.

C'mon BMW, you better not sell this thing for north of US$130,000! People paying more than this are going to want more than 0-62mph in 4.8s and 63mpg. Also, BMW needs to make sure they keep their eyes on the Porsche 918.

be curious to know what the final product will look like. for instance, how they'd address safety concerns from side-impact crashes.

talking of an over price cars, BMW beats Lexus by a mile on this one, i would go with an LFA over this. and i don't like the LFA.

Some lessons are difficult to learn. Anyone care for a BMW 508, Z8 or 850i? All great cars with too high a price for BMW's target market at the time. I bet this i8 will be great just like the other failures and sadly I suspect that this car will fail because of it's price and current economic climate. The i3 is different, I can see the trendy type buying that in good volumes but at the quoted price the i8 is going to be a difficult volume seller, what ever the desired volume is. EDIT TO ADD: I think the i8 looks awesome! I'd love to have one but wouldn't buy one.

Perhaps the i3's sales will allow the i8 to survive as a niche product?

It's a balsy design no doubt, but who's it for at that price? We're talking about a hybrid engine here!

i read from few magazines sometimes last year they gonna make a "M100" as a performance version of this i8 which has a tt V8 4.4 from the X5/6M and go from 0-100 in 3s. I hope they are still making it!
