Mercedes BLS set for 2014 launch - report
Mercedes F800 Style concept live in Geneva 03.03.2010

A CLS on the cheap

With Audi and BMW moving down market, it's no surprise that Mercedes is following suit with the B-Class sedan dubbed the 'baby CLS.'

While the vehicle has been rumored for months, a new report is indicating the car will be launched in 2014. The specifics are still kind of murky, but the model is expected to feature dramatic styling which draws inspiration from the CLS and F800 concept. Furthermore, the car will ride on the new MFA platform and feature front-wheel drive.

Engine options remain shrouded in mystery, but Auto Express is reporting choices will include a 2.0-liter petrol with 200 hp (149 kW / 203 PS) and a 2.2-liter diesel that develops 170 hp (127 kW / 172 PS). Additionally, the car could be outfitted with Renault engines as a result of their recent alliance with the French automaker.

that's because recently Hyundai and Mercedes had the same designers. the new Hyundais are designed in Germany.

It sounds rather American. In real world, I know it exactly, with Renault engine car starts at -30C freeze and never let you down. Most of of torque you will have at about 1800 rpm already.

A Mercedes-Renault-Nissan alliance will be interesting, but how will the French react if the Germans and Japanese team up against them ? that happened before :)

FWD...seriously... I think Mercedes has just lost it... Lets take a brief look into the past: 1. Mercedes 'A' Class (Failure) why cause it is a FWD 2. Mercedes 'B' Class (I dont like it) why cause it is a FWD 3. This stupid looking car... (gonna drag Mercedes down)...why cause it is a FWD Come to your senses while it is still early Mercedes, FWD will kill your business. Dont be stupid.

The A Class didn't fail because it was FWD. It failed because of the Elk test debacle on launch; and then it being too expensive but not sophisticated enough to match it's price for the sector. They did a premium small car badly. For information, most BMW drivers these days have no idea they are driving a RWD car. The stigma of FWD has long passed in this segment.

FWD vs RWD! A waste discussion. Try some real FWD cars out there and came back to speak. If you think only a RWD is good enough...You don't like cars.

FWD is better for this car, it will be cheaper and have better fuel economy. but there were rumours about an AMG version with AWD.

The A Class a failure? Says who? I would hope people knew what they were talking about (however, they scarcely do) : the A Class has been an immense sales success, not a failure - meaning it has been broadly appreciated by millions of real buyers throughout the years from its inception : while being derided by a handful of weird personalities. Get a life . . . . .

BLS design is great, but with FWD platform would be a waste. Please don't do this...

ok, it's FWD, but where is the problem? it might be the better choise for this carsize and I'm sure the better platform. the design is ok. for sure, not everyone's taste, but nice. I like the door-conception. it's the best ever

Actually quite like the aggressive styling, but FWD? That's what sets you and BMW apart man!

not necessarily; bmw themselves have admitted that they plan to introduce fwd models, and have decided this after realizing that many of their drivers don't even know that their cars are rwd. http://www.worldcarfans.com/110032225250/80-percent-of-bmw-1-series-drivers-think-the-car-is-a-front-wheel so no, if anything, the three german premium marques are so worried what each other is doing, that they end up all doing the same thing....

Diesel plug in hybrid please. I think Audi have proven that a lot of consumers don't get about FWD when it comes to cheaper models. Of course the more FWD cheap models Mercedes sells, the more AMG rockets we'll get. So it's a win win.

Gorden Wagener has degraded Mercedes ever since he became head of the design division. He is a disgrace; the Chris Bangle of Mercedes. I hope that Merc realises that this guy is a moron faster than it took BMW to realise that Bangle was killing the BMW brand.
