Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid coming in 2012 - report

Can travel 10-15 miles on electricity alone

According to a recent report, Honda will introduce an Accord Plug-in Hybrid sometime next year.

Details are limited, but the car will likely adopt the plug-in hybrid technology that was showcased at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This means we can expect the Accord to feature a 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, a 6 kWh lithium-ion battery, and an electric motor that develops 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS).

Thanks to this setup, the Accord would be able to travel 10 to 15 miles (16 to 24 km) on electricity alone at speeds up to 62 mph (100 km/h). Furthermore, the battery could be recharged in 2 to 2.5 hours with a conventional 120 volt household outlet or 1 to 1.5 hours with a 240 volt rapid charger.

First to market always rules. Toyota has been there, done that and trashed the teddy bear in the bin. Honda seem to be losing direction design-wise and in product strategy. In a bid to be more green, Honda may be losing their sports car soul. If new NSX ever gets made and turns out half-decent in all areas, I may just forgive Honda!

Honda will never lose their racing culture, as evident in their recent championships in SuperGT, British Touring cup, ALMS and Indy. The problem is that the rest of the world is too ignorant to realize that what Honda is doing is for sustainability (on all fronts). If you know anything about Japanese car brands, Honda is always the innovator, Toyota (along with the korean brands) steal/copy Honda's best ideas. Ask anyone in Japan working in the automobile industry and 9/10 people would agree. The NEXT NSX-type car will likely be hybrid- not petrol only. Honda's philosophy isn't necessarily to make petrol cars or even RWD. NSX and S2000 were cars that celebrated/commemorated an achievement, not to supply a demand. In this day and age of copycats, Honda is better off concealing their secrets and future technology. Honda has invested heavily in hydrogen fuel cell technology and is awaiting for the hydrogen era to begin. If anything, Japan is the leader of early adoption of future standards, often times scoffed at for doing something that is deemed "unnecessary". The rest of the world is culturally usually a decade or so behind in implementation if not realization of the future need of the said technology. The problem with Honda aren't their cars. The problem, I believe, is American Honda Sales and Product planning. The official photos are terrible. The PR person is a joke. American Honda needs to move away from relying on outsourced focus group research and stick to the gut instinct of the JDM Honda brand. All models should be made homologous across US, EU, and Asia. If design tastes REALLY differ that much from region to region, the variations should at least be available in either a trim or spec configuration. Personally, the Honda's built and designed for the JDM/EU/Asia markets are more thoughtful and exude a higher level of quality than what is designed/produced here in the states.
