These are the very first photos of the new BMW i3 caught during the filming of a BMW-TV production in Scandinavia.

Also known as the MegaCity Vehicle, BMW plans to sell up to 30,000 units in its first full year of sales in 2014. BMW launched the new 'i' sub-brand late last month under the tag line "Born Electric".

Unveiling of the i3 production version along with the i8 hybrid supercar will take place in 2013. Both models will be built at the Leipzig plant and ride on the "LifeDrive architecture" which has an aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell.

The i3 will produce well over 100 kW (134 bhp / 136 PS) via electric motors.

Described by BMW as futuristic premium mobility, the i3 is expected to be priced over €40,000.

Going to be interesting to see how they will transfer their shape-language over to this little fellow. Sure is exciting though!

I do love how all these companies talk about electric cars for the masses and all, and then starting price of 40,000 euros. LOL.

Its still a BMW so its going to be a luxury car with a premium price, and features. Just because its a small electric car doesn't automatically mean it should be price like a Toyota or VW. In the 30 years when possibly a large majority of car will be electric, there will be premium electric cars and economy priced electric cars. The I3 is the first premium electric car.

Sorry, I am a BMW fan but this is just cheap sh1t. This may be a small electric car but I don't see how it is going to justify a price tag that is double a Toyota Yaris. People who buy this shape are usually our budget consumers as this is not really an attractive car (more like the cheapest - entry level loaf of bread from Kia, Tata, etc.) Just because it has a BMW badge doesn't mean it can say it is premium and charge a mini fortune for this loaf of bread.

@KeyboardWarrior, read what kmayb said wrt CRP suspension and then remember that this i3 has a full Carbon Fibre passenger cell. Last time I checked most Carbon Fibre passenger celled cars were supercars costing many $100k's. This i3 is a revolutionary car not an evolutionary car like almost every car made to date. If you look at the technology used(CRP + full electric) and you are not blind(ed by brand bias) you cannot avoid the fact that this is another car like the NEW MINI that will sell despite people like you who don't like it, yet. This is a brave move by BMW imo and justification for it's F1 stint where it bought a factory and tech to make CRP products. I've read that other manufacturers are looking to BMW for assistance in tech like this. Go figure.

as I tried to imagine this without camouflage, I almost puked all over my keyboard. Hopefully BMW will show the world that electic cars dont have to be inevitably ugly. they have already proved it with Efficient Dynamics concept which is beautiful so they should keep it this way

Although I have no interest in small small city cars, I actually can't wait to see the production version of the i3. But I'm really more interested in VW's Bulli concept.

Just knowing what this little baby is going to do for mass produced Carbon Fibre tech is enough to get excited about. Have you seen the suspension patents for this thing , super light , super strong CRP units. Awesome!
