MINI heads back to rally racing [video]

Video shows MINI testing the Countryman WRC model on both dirt and track

Here's a video showcasing MINI's return to rally racing this season with the MINI Countryman WRC.

The brand is banking on its history in the sport to lend it some credibility as it embarks on a return after so many years of absence.

Last month at the Monte Carlo Historic Rally, MINI brought together its new crew, Kris Meeke and Dani Sordo, and the old duo of Rauno Aaltonen and Paddy Hopkirk who raced for the brand in the 1960s.

The new Countryman WRC was developed by race team Prodrive. It features a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine from BMW Motorsport. The Countryman WRC will race in a few selected events in the 2011 season before competing fully in WRC in 2012.

This is a promising rally car, NOT a resurrection of The Legend.

Well, is the mini so legandary in rally anyway? I've always considered the stratos and ur-quattro legendary. I think this is going to fail. Doesn't seem to handle like a rally car at the video above anyway..

A marketing ploy even worse than the Peugeot 307 CC WRC (convertible based) that had its ass handed to it a few years back. If Mini were serious about returning to rallying they'd use a regular model, not this lemon base car. Hope and expect they get thrashed by Citroen and Ford.

the bloody standard car is pointless as it is only 4 seats and should be 5

BMW may yet regret this decision. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The MINI should have been stripped out for a return to Monte Carlo not the Countryman.
