Tesla Model S launch details announced - starts at $57,400
2012 Telsa Model S - 1.19.2011

First deliveries scheduled for mid-2012

Nearly two years after the Model S was unveiled, Tesla has announced the first vehicles will be delivered in mid-2012 (late 2012 in Europe).

The first 1,000 cars will be a limited edition "Signature Series" that feature special badging and "an extensive complement of options." They will be motivated by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery which sends power to an electric motor that enables the Model S to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, hit a top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h), and travel up to 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

Pricing information hasn't been finalized, but the standard Model S 300M (300 mile range) costs approximately $77,400. If that sounds a little expensive, there will also be a 230M (307 km) and 160M (258 km) that cost $67,400 and $57,400 respectively. Thankfully, all the variants will be eligible for a $7,500 U.S. government tax credit.

If everything goes according to plan, Tesla will build 5,000 Model S' in 2012. A year later, the company hopes to produce 20,000 units.

Tesla S is the closest thing yet to sedan perfection. I wouldn't change a single aspect of the design. If the performance numbers are correct it will be a huge success. I WANT ONE !!!

totally agree... and if someone says that it's a little too expensive... well, considering that the new Volt and Ampera will cost around 40 - 50,000 USD then this is practically a bargain... the looks, the performance, the simple fact that it is all electric with a range up to 300 miles... great job guys and bring it on to Europe and everywhere else to teach the big automakers how to create true green cars...

This car is awesome. The performance is great with 300 mile duration. This is going to make electric more competitive and the new battery technology will spawn other business and I want to buy stocks in these developing battery companies.

Despite obvious design cues from Maserati, Jaguar and Aston Martin, this Tesla makes the roadster look ugly. Electrically sexy. Can't believe I'm saying that about an all-electric car!

Better news for the UK, as the full purchase price can be offset against company tax and there is zero Benefit in Kind for a company car driver, meaning this car effectively costs nothing to buy and you pay no tax on an ongoing basis for it either!
