Ferrari FF's 4WD system explained [video]

Ferrari's 4RM system is a first for the storied Italian sports car maker

Here's a video that provides more details on Ferrari's new 4RM all-wheel drive system.

The 4RM is the first ever AWD system for Ferrari which the Italian brand debuted in the Ferrari Four concept, or "FF", in Geneva last week.

The 4RM (Ruote Motrici) is 50 percent lighter than a standard all-wheel drive system. The PTU (power transfer unit) takes its torque directly from the crankshaft while two separate multi-plate clutches drive the front wheels independently.

The FF is a luxury cruiser that seats 4 and has a small trunk in the rear - which Ferrari loaded with 2 golf bags while the car wooed the crowds at the Geneva show to demonstrate its (limited) capacity.

The Ferrari Four features a mid-front mounted 6.3 liter V12 engine with an output of 660 PS (485 kW / 651 bhp) and 683 Nm (504 lb-ft) of torque coupled to a seven-speed double-clutch gearbox. 0 to 100 km/h clocks in at 3.7 seconds and top speed is 335 km/h (208 mph).

nice. as long as it keeps the performance and driving experience impressive, it's not like too many ferrari owners will be tracking their 2+2. there are other ferrari's for that purpose.

I love this car, I love their old stuff and I even like the fact that it hasn't been unanimously well received but Ferrari has listened to its heart making this car and not its mind (the california) and I have no doubt this will appeal to the older car aficionados including those GTR techies for its internal high tech wizardry.

I find this to be very beautiful... and rather appealing. Hatch and all! If money were no object, I could see myself really considering this car.

New design direction and chassis technology caused a major stir for Ferrari with the FF, but now it's sold out! Result for taking a risk with this car. Audi and Subaru would be envious of this breakthrough by Ferrari. Expect to see this 4WD in future Prancing Horse products.

Usually its dealers pre-ordering cars that they assume their customers will LOVE that warrants first-year-sellout status. Exotic cars are usually the worst because of the limited availability to begin with. If you were a Ferrari dealer, wouldnt you pre-order as many of these as you can get? This thing can actually be used... They're gonna sell like crack cocain!
