New compact roadster features improved handling over the previous generation and a less-noisy open cabin

Mercedes-Benz has rolled out the 2012 SLK roadster onto the floor at the Geneva auto salon this week.

This third-generation of the SLK features many of the cues from Mercedes-Benz's current design language, including the more bullish, upright grill and bonnet lines that reference the SLS.

The SLK is a convertible featuring a vario-roof with Magic Sky Control which can vary the tint of the panoramic folding hard-top roof between brighter and darker.

Engine options include a 3.5 liter V6 for the SLK350 with an output of 306 PS (225 kW / 302 bhp) and a 1.8 liter turbocharged unit producing 201 PS (148 kW).

Ride is improved over the previous generation by means of firmer springs and dampers and torque-vectoring brakes. Comfort for the driver and passenger is aided by the Airguide windstop system which elminates noise and controls air flow in the cabin when the top is down.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster is already available for order in Germany and will make it to dealer showrooms in the United States this summer.

Prices in Germany begin at, VAT included, as follows:

SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY: €38,675
SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY: €44,256.10
SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY: €52,300.50.

Tail lights may look like LS460 but overall this car looks awsome and better looking than a Boxter.

with its roof down looks like a face lift. But with its roof up and in silver looks very nice. Looks like the SLS so an SLS for cheaper and folding hard-top roof . i like.

Is that right? 38K Euros starting price? :S I'm guessing when this model gets fat enough, they'll build a smaller one and call it the BLK or something.

I agree, all the older generations looked better than the current models.Current designs have cheapened the look of an elegant & classy brand.

Worst looking and the most disproportionate Mercedes ever. Ugly. Completely spoiled the beauty of the last gen SLK.

Silver doesn't flatter it. Red's not bad and serves to highlight the Alfa 4C likeness at the rear.

I diagree, with you silver comment. I have to benzes both in iridium silver and they are Beautiful. Cant wait to see this car in the flesh. Red looks like a big wound. But to each his or her own. I think this is so much more than the previous generation. I saw a pic of the rear end at night with the brake lights on so hot looking. But hey Iam a fan of this car.

The whole point is to stop the SLK looking like a 'hair-dresser's' favourite soft-top! So, the SLK either looks like a dimunitive CL, SL or the new SLS. That's a fair deal. Can't wait to see it!

There is nothing gay about this car,and to make such an assinine statement shows how ignorant you are. What this isnt is unreliable and problematic, like the Z4 and more technologically advanced than the outdated never changes , ratty cloth roof Boxter. And one last thought to the person who says it looks like a "Hairdressers favorite soft top, gay or straight as you try to imply I dont know many "Hairdressers " who can afford to put out 70K plus for a two seater SLK 350 V6 . Hope I am wrong this is a Beautiful car.
