 Bristol Cars goes into administration

Financially troubled specialty British marque Bristol Cars is now under new leadership which will try to save the brand

British specialty marque Bristol Cars has been ordered into administration by a U.K. court.

The financially troubled sports car brand is now being run by Tom MacLennan and Trevor Binyon of consultancy group RSM Tenon.

Administration in Britain is a form of bankruptcy where the courts appoint new leadership to keep the company operating while securing the best interest of its creditors.

Bristol Cars was formed in 1946 out of the wartime aerospace industry. It features a single retail outlet in (west) London on Kensington High Street. It is known as a peculiar brand which does not even make its cars available to auto journalists for testing.

The automakers features four models in its current lineup - the Blenheim, Blenheim Speedster, the Fighter and the Series 6. It's range-topper is the Fighter T which comes with a twin-turbo V10 from the Dodge Viper with over 1000 horsepower.

Speaking to the BBC in Bristol, MacLennan said, "We are maintaining the sales and service operations so customers will continue to be supported."

Shame really, but I thought it was only a question of time? I quite liked that Blenheim Speedster but was shocked to find it cost [back in 2003] ?150,000?!! But it looked like you built it yourself for ?500?! Ho hum.

Let it die a gentle death... this manufacturer was pretty much founded off the theft of BMW's work, I say it's about 65 years too late.

A very strange post. The Bristol Aeroplane Company found itself with a bit less to do once the war was over so as part of war reparations -- the Nazis had done some beastly things and dumped a fair few bombs around the factory -- were given some BMW designs. I'm assuming you think Adolf just got bad press?

What this has to do with Adolf is beyond me, Bristol went to the factory and took designs; very different from saying they were given these designs.

And what evidence to you have to support this "theft"? Make it good, as allegations of theft without substantiation are a serious matter.

What I see is bmwnwith a line of beautiful cars and Bristol with a corvette hatchback looking thing. I don't think he followed whatever designs he stole very well.

Holy crap you're kidding me, that Blenheim is in their current line up. It looks like an 80s Chinese bentley knockoff.

Having just flipped through the pages of Autocar's "Road Test Number 5000" 400-page magazine and seen the likes of the: Jaguar E-Type Jaguar Mk2 3.8 Lotus Elan 1600 (and Elite) MG MGB et al Since Bristol liked making older cars, I'm sure there is a market for modern-day replica versions of such classic cars, provided you don't overcharge [like ?150,000!]... And maybe include the likes of the Morris Minor and Austin 7??? Yes, there may be copyright issues but lets face it these cars aren?t made anymore, and they?re all British so???

TVR disappeared to Russia with Mr Smolenski, Rover/MG zoomed off to China with Nanjing SAIC and now Bristol Cars. How predictable! When quality mark is abbysmal, and design language is nondescript, alarm bells starts ringing and if unheeded, the inevitable occurs. Auto journalists pan their cars, loyal customers revolt and defect to rivals and the writing is on the wall. Bristol's attitude to its customers and journalists is no different to TVR some years back! Good riddance I say old chap!

And where did you collect you information on Bristol not looking after owners of its cars? Please share. I've owned TVRs and Bristols so this is a subject I know something about.

Apparently Bristol's CEO used to refuse to sell cars to people he personally didn't like; with that in mind I'm not surprised with what GTurbo is saying.

Old wives tales. And Tony Crook hasn't been part of the company since 2007.

I'm not surprised - ugly looking piece of junk and they want 200 grand for it! Good riddance - bad design, no technology, overpriced.
