Toyota FT-86 II Concept revealed in Geneva

Toyota FT-86 II Concept revealed in Geneva
Toyota FT-86 II Concept live in Geneva - 01.03.2011

Toyota has unveiled their concept version of the sports car they have jointly designed with Subaru.  The rear-wheel drive Toyota FT-86 II Concept is a preview of the model expected to hit the European market in 2012.

On display now at the Geneva Motor Show, the car has a short rear end, similar to the classic 2000 GT, and a low front end that looks like an evolution of the FT-HS concept seen at the 2010 NAIAS.  It's lengthier hood is also reminiscent of the Toyota Supra Mark III, and combines with the other design elements to create a modern Batmobile look.

This is not a bad thing at all.  The car looks sophisticated from the side, aggressive at the front and modern at the back, and Toyota says that it is quite close to the final look of the production model.  The concept measures 4,235mm long, over a 2,570mm wheelbase, and is 1,795mm wide by 1,270mm high.  That translates to a car that is as wide as the current Subaru Impreza STI, but is 200mm shorter in height, and 350mm shorter in length.

As expected, the car uses a boxer engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.  The car's rear set cabin and mid-front engine position have helped to achieve better balance and a lower center of gravity, according to the automaker.  Engine specifications were not revealed.

Let us know your opinion of the car in the comments section below.

PASSION IS BACK: TOYOTA UNVEILS THE FT-86 II CONCEPT

Show car paves the way for launch of new Toyota sports model in 2012

  • World premiere of sports concept car at Geneva motor show
  • Design and engineering pay homage to great Toyota sports cars of the past
  • Strongest indication yet of how new Toyota production model will look
  • Designed and engineered for excellent power-to-weight ratio and balance
  • Compact, lightweight powertrain features boxer petrol engine and six-speed manual transmission
  • Front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration
  • New model, jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, to be launched in 2012

The new FT-86 II Concept makes its world debut at the Geneva motor show, giving the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota's next sports car. It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s.

With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the FT-86 II pays homage to Toyota's sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota's European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed ‘functional beauty': its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT86 II returns to Toyota's sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

The FT-86 II Concept is the latest stage in the development of a new, compact rear-wheel drive sports car that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). The new model will be launched in Europe in 2012.

I'm excited that Toyota is finally coming out with a sports car and on top of that it'll be a rear wheel drive sports car. But I'm very disappointed by the design of it's CONCEPT. Why are the LED lights there? What is up with the Optima-like side repeaters? It's only a concept too. sigh... come on Toyota...

Number 1 manufacturer producing appliances. The Corolla and Camry are nothing to get excited about. This car is OK. Interesting for Toyota I guess.

among all post, this one is the worst. why envy the beautiful sexy alfa? seriously toyota is not beautiful. it just function as a TOY-ota, as the name suggest. comparing alfa and toyota sales is seriously total joke. so i guess you r the one who need to read dictionary to understand in depth of the word 'taste'. well good luck! ;)

I hope that Toyota revives the famous "Celica" name for this new sports car.

Diss this car all you like folks, but this is perhaps a seminal moment in Toyota's history since the ground-breaking Supra shape with a 3litre twin-turbo V6 engine, complete with 326bhp. It put the contemporary BMW M3 to shame. Highly dramatic lines shows the future design direction of the once-drab Toyota to a 2FAST, 2FURIOUS race track!

Prior to the FT-86 concept variants, people lament the lost of Toyota sports cars such as the Supra, Celica and MR2. Now, the latest iteration of Toyota's ambition to make a proper sportscar 'comeback' has been criticized once again. My take on the car is neutral, neither excited nor depressed about it. However, it is noteworthy of the Japanese king of 'bread and butter' car manufacturers is reviving its sportscar division, in a realistic manner.
