New 2.0 liter aluminum block engine will be fitted with different turbochargers for output variants up to 245 PS (180 kW / 241 bhp)

BMW will be offering its range of 2.0 liter four-cylinder petrols exclusively in turbocharged configurations, according to a report by Autocar.

The automaker will have varying output levels for its new 2.0 liter petrol turbo that will top-out in a 245 PS (180 kW / 241 bhp) rated variant, as introduced recently in the X1 xDrive28i (torque: 350 Nm / 258 lb-ft).

That 2.0 liter aluminum block will be fitted with different turbocharging systems depending on the output variant. The range-topping 245 PS version gets a twin-scroll turbocharger while lower-powered variants will make due with a conventional turbo.

The 2.0 liter turbo range will handle all model variants with outputs up to the 245 PS level, above which BMW will slate its 3.0 liter inline straight-six engine for higher-powered variants.

The report doesn't state whether the 1.6 liter turbo BMW Group uses for the MINI brand will also be employed in BMW models with lower output levels.

The new set of 2.0 liter turbo variants will debut in the next-generation 3-Series expected in 2012.

E36 M3 numbers. I love that BMW has embraced newer-tech turbo motors, cause they seem to be damned good at them.

I also like the BMW Outback. Have always been a fan of wagons, and i know this is supposed to be an SUV/crossover, but its the closest thing BMW NA has to a wagon now...

I know that we all need to be conscious about the environment and fuel economy, CO2 emissions levels blah blah blah, and the likes of Audi and Mercedes have already adopted the one small 4 cylinder engine in various states of tune. However, you now have to go further up the BMW ladder to get its superb, creamy 6 cylinder petrol engines. Remember when a 320i gave you a ticket to the world of what BMW did best, in making their straight six engines. How the times have changed.
