Toyota has announced plans to introduce the iQ electric vehicle prototype at the Geneva Motor Show.

Essentially a near-production version of the FT-EV concept, the iQ features a newly-developed flat lithium-ion battery that enables the car to travel approximately 105 kilometers (65 miles) on a single charge. The company will begin testing the vehicle later this year, before leasing it to European consumers in 2012.

The car will debut alongside the Yaris Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) concept, the FT-86 II concept, and the new seven-seat Prius+.

Cologne. Toyota is at the Geneva Motor Show 2011 (3 to 13 March) as the European premiere of the latest prototype of an electric vehicle. The electric drive train of the vehicle based on the versatile adaptable Hybrid Synergy Drive from Toyota. The new electric vehicle (EV) represents, together with the developed parallel full hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell hybrid vehicles, the long-term vision for sustainable mobility, Toyota.

 

The EV prototype features an all-electric drive, which was integrated into the package of the Toyota iQ. The car combines the agility of a compact city car with complete freedom from emissions, the fascination of the almost silent and a driving range of up to 105 kilometers (measured in the Japanese test cycle C08).

Using a newly developed, extremely flat and compact lithium-ion battery provides an exceptionally intelligent vehicle packaging that requires no compromise on space for four passengers and the cargo capacity.

The new Toyota electric car will be tested during the year 2011 in Europe. 2012, the complete vehicle developed in Europe as part of a leasing program is introduced. In addition to the European premiere of the EV prototype is Toyota at the Geneva Show, the Yaris HSD Concept concept car, the seven-seater hybrid Prius Van + and the sports car concept FT-86 II. The Toyota press conference will be held on Tuesday 1 March, at 9.15 clock instead.

there needs to be a standardised fitment for battery packs introduced now at the electric cars infancy to avoid problems like we have with mobile phone chargers. that way battery packs could be replaced easily- ie. when someone develops a battery that lets this car have a 200, or 300 km range. independent companies would start working on battery packs and the speed of progress would be greatly increased.
