Offer is part of new options available for X5 and X6 models as of the spring

BMW is offering a new set of options for the X5 and X6 models, including a conversion to a 5-seater for the X6 SUV coupe.

By removing the center console on the four-seat X6, an extra rear seat is added large enough to comfortably fit an adult, as BMW demonstrates in the photos published here.

The extra seat option is available for all X6 variants, including the X6 M, except for the X6 ActiveHybrid.

Also new for the X5 and X6 models are 20-inch alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design and a black gloss finish fitted with 275/40R20 tires at the front and 315/35R20s for the rear.

BMW will also be fitting Comfort Access to the X5 and X6 starting in the spring, a feature which provides lighting for the exterior door handles as part of the car key access system.

The brand is also promising shift paddles on the steering wheel for the future X5 and X6 and extending the services of BMW ConnectDrive for the X5 and X6 range to include BMW Apps - a feature which allows connectivity via an iPhone to Apple's iTunes, Facebook and Twitter as well as accessing web radio from inside the car.

For the most discerning requirements: BMW X5 and BMW X6 present a new range of special options for spring 2011.

09.02.2011 Press Release

Munich. Superior handling, commanding traction and characteristic styling are key contributors to the stand-out position the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models enjoy among the premium all-wheel-drive vehicles of their segment. Spring 2011 sees the introduction of specific additions to the range of special options to ratchet up the appeal even further. Among other features, new 20-inch light-alloy wheel rims are available for both models, while the choice of BMW ConnectedDrive technology has been augmented by the innovative BMW Apps feature. Meanwhile, a three-seater rear seat option making its debut in April 2011 adds greater flexibility to the usage of the interior of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé, which started out as a four-seater model.
The new rear-seat variant is available for all BMW X6 models with the exception of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and can also be ordered for the BMW X6 M. The extra seat replaces the storage unit in the rear centre of the four-seater model. The five-seater Sports Activity Coupé is also optionally available in Nevada and Exclusive Nappa leather as well as BMW Individual Merino leather, encompassing the entire colour range. Another novelty is the operation of the standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. In future, the BMW X6 will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel whose operating logic follows the principle familiar from BMW M cars: for manual shifting of the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, the right paddle is used for upshifts and the left for downshifts.
For the BMW X5 and BMW X6 alike, the choice of alloy wheels has been extended by a further option that positively enhances both the car's dynamic cornering behaviour and its appearance. The 20-inch wheels in Y-spoke design and with a Black high gloss finish are combined with mixed tyres measuring 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear. From spring 2011, Comfort Access - likewise available for both models - will include vicinity lighting integrated in the exterior door handles. In addition to automatic unlocking and activation of the ignition, this feature provides effective illumination of the car's surroundings as soon as the electronic control of Comfort Access has recognised the car key carried by the driver.
Following directly on from the market launch, the extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive services also becomes available for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. In future both models will be able to avail themselves of the BMW Apps special option. This feature enables owners of an Apple iPhone to stay in touch with the online services Facebook and Twitter while in the car, as well as receive radio stations from all over the world, irrespective of the car's location, thanks to a web radio function. In addition to the current BMW ConnectedDrive application, customers will have a range of functions and apps available for free download at the Apple App Store.
With these latest innovations, BMW is systematically pursuing its ongoing product optimisation for these two models built at its US plant in Spartanburg. Most recently, last year's market launch of the new BMW X5 and the comprehensive upgrading of the BMW X6's drive technology gave a further boost to BMW's success in this competitive environment. As well as the continued rise in BMW X5 sales in 2010, global growth in demand for the BMW X6 is also feeding the exceptional market success of the BMW X models. In just three years, more than 110,000 units of these Sports Activity Coupés have already been sold, 46,404 of them in 2010 alone. The BMW X5 posted worldwide sales of 102,178 units in the last business year.

Are we going to be able to take off the console and put the fifth seat in our cars or is it just for the new models?

i knew that in the x6 you couldnt fit my little nephew, in the back, but in an x5....?? i mean, if the standard x5 cannot acomodate 5 people (and almost all its rivals have an 7 seat option) to me, that's a crap suv. (the x6 is crap from the begining). i see nothing wrong with a 5 series touring. or did i get this wrong....

The mk1 X5 was a five seater only. The mk2 X5 is available as a 7 seater.

Hellbound, I understand what you're trying to say, but forgive me if I'm wrong, by "CSL" do you mean "CLS". If you meant CLS then your argument is a little off because the CLS by Mercedes is a SEDAN and so is the Passat CC by Volkswagen. The X6 on the other hand is an SUV and last time I checked SUVs were meant to be practical, not impractical.

@audisrgay - Corrected the CLS debacle (it was late). By the way, last time I checked, the X6 was being touted as a Sports Activity Coupe. I wasn't making an argument, just a mere observation. Comparing the X6 5 door coupe with 4WD to it's sedan counterparts regarding seating arrangements is perfectly valid. The X6 was conceived as a CLS-esque SUV. That is, a slanting roof akin to a coupe along with sporty stance. It's worth mentioning both the Passat CC and MB CLS have now added the 5 seat option. It's just the market reacting to consumers' demands. If you want a practical, full fat SUV, there's the X5, Landcruiser, GL class etc etc. I want an 8 seater option for all 7 seaters. At the moment the only way of doing it is either speccing a van-like Land Rover Defender to have extra seats, blowing ?80k on a G-wagon or getting a new LandCruiser and fitting the JDM 8 seat pack from Japan.

Yes its a SAV. Say what you will but X6 is not meant to be a 'practical' SUV. Some consumers are pretty stupid sometimes.

All of you bashing the headroom capacity of the back seat in the x6..... ever seen the people behind the wheel of these cars on the road? They are usually an "older" couple (50 or over), a very young couple with kids, a mom with car seats or dogs in the back. A younger person that can afford this vehicle will opt for something flashier to transport him or her adult friends in. So, in reality, this vehicle is very well suited for the demographics that purchase it; whether it was intentional or not.

So, what's the point of the X6 then if it's now going to have 5 seats? Wasn't that supposed to be the X5's brief? Absolutely ridiculous money-making farce from BMW.

I wonder how tall the people are in the pictures - they look a little hunched over. Just wait til they hit that first pothole! What they failed to include is a second option needed to accommodate 3 in the back seat called a sawzall - to open up the roof. Of course, that would void any warranties as when water leaks into the trunk it'll fry all the electronics stored there and of course cutting into the roof probably messes up the structural integrity of the ve-hick-ill.
