Inching closer to production

Our spy photographers have managed to catch several new pictures of the 2013 Mercedes S-Class.

Caught undergoing testing in southern Germany, the prototype is covered in a blanket of camouflage which hides many of the key styling details. While this is unfortunate, we can get a glimpse of the larger grille and CLS-inspired headlights with LED indicators. Furthermore, the car looks slightly larger than its predecessor and will likely have a design influenced by the F700 concept.

As we have previously reported, the new S-Class may be available exclusively with hybrid engines. Nothing is official, but Mercedes believes this will ensure the model is compliant with rising fuel economy and emission standards. Regardless of whether or not the hybrid-only lineup is approved, the next-generation model will be available as a plug-in hybrid.  It will likely feature the same powertrain as the S 500 Vision concept which should enable it to average 78 mpg (3.0 L/100km).

The latest version of the greatest sedan in the world. Can't wait to see what it looks like...

The designs Mercedes has been coming up with lately are so bad that I prefer to look at their cars with the camouflage on.The W220 looked great, why they created such an ugly successor (W221) with it's 7 series boot is a mystery to me.

couldn't agree more. I loved the 220 and when the 221 came out it was just wtf...like most of Merc's recent designs.

I like the front of the SL, it's like a punch in the face. The SLS is brutally handsome. These are mens cars. If you want something pretty, go elsewhere.

I have to agree with you accousticjama.. Pity as Merc have produced some real classic designs in the past - all ugly now, bar the SLS.

some fundamental design and engineering issues: 1. very agressive vertical face, with a swishy/aerodynamic cockpit and rear end. That's about as schizophrenic as a Honda Accord. (personally, screw the gas mileage and give me traditional coherent proportions) 2. electric steering and brakes feel like a golf cart, no feedback=no fun 3. typical mercedes suspension is too soft 3. raspy (albeit subdued) ugly exhaust note. 4. as a side note, what's with the undersized el cheapo rims?

The current S-Class has been a huge success. The rear end looks more like the back of a Maybach than a 7-Series. I guess somebody likes the way they look. I definitely do.

maybach..which came after the 7 series so yes the rear end has the 7 series bangle butt.

Bullsh*t, GSS5. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept was first shown in 1997, long before the Bangle-era 7 Series was even conceived. So if anything it's the other way around. W221 was IMO a step back in terms of what the car looked like with respect to the rest of the cars on the planet, but it was still a good enough design. I have very high expectations for this one.

OMG, the high rear trunk-lid is for fuel-economy, not styling. If you notice, every car in this segment has one now...because the wind tunnel told them to, not because they want to worship at the shrine of BMW or Maybach... Dr Wunibald Kamm was the first to understand and apply it practically in 1938. Not much is ever said about him though because, in 1938, Germany was making headlines for other, more pressing, reasons...

I like the current version W221 and it still looks fresh, I don't why they are using the CLS lights which look ugly.

As far as styling goes, I'll reserve my judgment until Merc removes the camo. What I'm more worried about is the powertrain, cause I don't want my future S-Class to be a bloody hybrid; I want my S-class to still have a monstrous V12. The Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has already said that her Holden Caprice V8 will be superceeded by a Toyota Camry hybrid ( OH FFS!!! ).

I hate Julia Gillard. She's unbelievably awful to watch. She actually reflects everything the world thinks of Australia, and according to a recent survey, what Australians think of themselves!

Hybrid doesn't mean slow or efficient, it simply means the vehicle has more than one power source. If Mercedes tucked a small electric motor between the turbo V12 and 7-speed transmission (in-place-of/acting-as the tq converter) what would be the issue? Insta-tq, 500+hp and 30MPG...sounds like a GREAT idea to me!

Hellbound?! Since when did WCF become a politics website?! And i'd like to see how you come across after your country had been battered constantly by floods the size of two countries and a hurricane more powerful than the one that hit New Orleans. New S Class will be another step forward with new tech we never thought we'd need in a car, like all other S class' before it....

Listen lads, lets not getting into political debates here - I'm sure we all have a view about most nationalities! Now back to cars - yes the S-Class is the best car a lot of money can buy, I will reserve judgement on the looks until I see it without the camouflage on it. If I were going to be in a very bad crash because some skumbag joyrider ploughed into me there is no other car I would rather be in than the latest s-class to protect me. They are great cars.

Geez, whats with all the angry Australians?
February 3, 2011 10:04 am
 TheSilentKnight TheSilentKnight
@ benz man: We Australians are a wee lil bit angry because our Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her predeccessor, Kevin Rudd, have put the Australian economy from having a AUD$96Billion surplus into a AUD$412Billion debt in a space of four years. Now considering that there are only 22.5million Australians ( roughly 50% of the population of California ), that's a pretty big debt whichever way you look at it. Also she is about to introduce a 'Carbon Tax' which'll end the Australian agricultural industry because Australia is the ONLY country in the 1st world to not have a subsidised agricultural industry - so basically my father who busts his arse every day for a meagre living is about to be bankrupted. @Hellbound: She is not only awful to watch, but also awful to listen to; especially when she called me an 'unsustainable Australian', because I drive a Holden Caprice V8 just like hers ( only mine is tuned and is better ). @DUCATI46: If you're not Australian, then I am glad that you are aware of the recent floods and cyclone that has shaken the state of Queensland to the core. My sister and brother in-law live in Cairns ( Australia's small version of Miami if you like ) and fortunately that city was spared the full-bore 300km/h ( 186mph ) gusts. Unfortunately due to the weather activity there, the price of many foods is set to rise by 20-64% ( depending on what produce you buy ) and fuel prices are set to rise by up to 25%. One question I must ask, especially during the Queensland floods, is where the hell was the UN while all this devastation happened?
