Will compete with the Ford Ka and Volkswagen Up!

Opel's new Allegra is inching closer to production as our spy photographers have caught an early development mule for the upcoming model.

Spied wearing a shortened Corsa body, the prototype doesn't reveal much but the car is expected to resemble the Trixx concept from the 2004 Geneva Motor Show.

No word on engine options, but Opel has previously stated the city car will be fuel-efficient and possibility available as a battery electric vehicle (BEV).

Scheduled to go into production in 2013, the entry-level Allegra will be built in Eisenach, Germany and compete with the Ford Ka and Volkswagen Lupo / Up.

I'm not sure about this. From what I can see, it has too much styling and too less practicality. No room in the back seats, no rear visibility, so I doubt it'll stand against the likes of Fiat Panda or Kia Picanto. And if Opel want to make a rival for Fiat 500, than it's even worse - it's just Corsa, only in smaller scale.

We have't seen the styling. We don't know what it looks like, so how can you make any of those statements. Ah, from not understanding what a mule is and thinking they'll do nothing other than take a few inches out of a Corsa and market a 7 year old car as new...

Yeah, next time I should remember to read ALL of the article before making a comment. Seems I've just made fool of myself. Sorry everyone, just ignore my comment above.

Opel's Ka. Downsizing policy. In about ten years or so we'll see again the '60s minis on the road; engines of 500 or 600 cc will be a common place. ...still better than a crappy EV...

I think what we'll see will likely have bigger engines, more likely in the 800-900 cc size with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, combined with either a six-to-eight speed dual-clutch transmission or future technology CVT.
