Volvo to reduce U.S. lineup

 Volvo to reduce U.S. lineup
Volvo V50 Facelift

No more wagons?

In a quest to increase sales, Volvo will reduce their U.S. lineup to focus on "five or six" models. While this sounds contradictory, the company believes a smaller lineup will help them maximize their marketing efforts and increase consumer awareness.

Considering the brand currently sells nine vehicles in America, we can expect three or four models will be trimmed. Doug Speck, the President of Volvo North America, has already confirmed the V50 is a goner so that leaves two or three vehicles with a death sentence.

The S60, XC60 and XC90 are safe, but the V70 was recently axed so chances aren't looking good for the XC70. That likely leaves one or two other candidates, so what's your guess? The S80? The C70? The C30? Feel free to let us know in the comments.

Well, Volvo marketing guys, do what you've gotta do. But if there are no proper Volvo wagons on your US lots, I, for one, won't ever be shopping your brand. To be on my shopping list, a manufacturer must have a real station wagon with ground clearance no higher than that of a sport sedan. Crossovers don't cut it - a high center of gravity is too much of a handling compromise. So now my choices are: SAAB, Cadillac, Acura and Audi. Volvo and Subaru need no longer apply.

If memory serves me right, Volvo's heyday in the US was the 1980s. It was, and still is, a "near" luxury European automaker. Kill the S80... it's old, based on Ford architecture, and no one buys new ones. C70 has never sold well either, and there are European alternatives with more value for your buck than the C30.

the problem with Volvo is that their car just lack that refinement that their competitors have... look at the S40 versus its platform mate the Mazda 3... Mazda got that car refined while the S40 is just... cute lol

Keep the XC60 and S60. That's it. Volvo hasn't kept the others product lines up to date. They should retrofit the new safety features of these two cars to the other models. Why keep the XC90!?! It's r-e-a-l-l-y overdue for a facelift. While the XC70 and S80 have been updated, Volvo is probably better off keeping the C30, S40, and V50. (Gosh, I'd keep the V50 over the S40. I see more V50's around than S40s or C30s.) Capture some of the late 20s set and you could have their repeat business. Eight years is too long to go in this segment. Very sad.

When they say they'll keep the XC90 they mean they'll keep the nameplate, not necessarily the exact car. Whenever the nex XC90 comes out (Probably soon) it'll still be called XC90. So why not keep it?

Did you mean S60 instead of S80? The S60 is actually getting pretty good reviews, and I was impressed with it when I saw in person. Moreover, it has sold much better than the S80. As for the XC90, while it is definitely overdue for a facelift, it is still definitely a factor in its market. Also, I actually see the exact opposite of you, far more S40s then V50s.
