Next-gen VW Golf could be built in U.S. - report
Euro-hatch in search of a green card?
With Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant gearing up for Passat production, rumors are circulating that the U.S. factory could also build the next-generation Golf.
While nothing is official, an anonymous source told InsideLine that Golf production is under consideration. This would seemingly be a logical move as the current Golf starts at $17,965 which is $1,970 more than roomier Jetta.
As we reported earlier this week, the next-generation Golf is scheduled to be introduced in late 2012 or early 2013. It is slated to ride on the new MQB architecture which will also underpin the redesigned Audi A3. This, by extension, could also imply the A3 will be built in Tennessee.

A3 likely to come out before Golf so i doubt if it will be produced stateside anytime soon.

Bad idea VW - US had it's chance and blew it... 80+ years of auto incompetence, over-unionisation and refusal to look at new tech... maybe if you made cars with decent mileage you wouldn't have to take control of the world's oil supply by force!? ;)

Must be built in that brand new Passat factory in Tennessee, then?
Read VW are launching the next Golf 7 one year earlier than expected in 2012 [per Autobild] No doubt it?s because Ford has messed up the handling of their new Focus [they should re-name it the Ford Escort shouldn't they?]

I think a more likely model to be built in the USA--though more likely in Mexico at VW's Puebla plant--is the four-door sedan version of the VW Polo, which recently went on sale in Eastern Europe.

As a former Jetta owner, I really hope that VW leaves one mainstream model with high quality interiors. The fact is the US-spec Passat is uninspired on the outside and much cheaper-feeling on the inside, and the cost-savings for the new Jetta are obvious as my former 2000 VW Jetta felt much better made than the current car. While VW needs to drive up its sales, some people are attracted to VW for its perceived better build quality. I think Golf buyers, in particular, are willing to pay for that premium as if they wanted just a hatch, they could easily go to Honda, Toyota, or Mazda for less money.

build the USA market Golf in the USA but keep producing the EU one in Germany. It seems ridiculous to produce Golfs in America and then ship them to Europe.

It's not going on unnoticed that the German Unions are allowed to abuse US manufactures in Germany and the Germans (VW) are not giving the same rights to it's US workers.
