Alleged BMW 1-Series GT image surfaces - based on next 1er

Insider says image is close to what a 1-Series Gran Turismo based on the next-generation 1er will look like

BMW really wants into every nook and cranny of each sub-segment.

According to reliable BMW insider known as Scott27, the 1-Series Gran Turismo is a go for the next-generation 1er and it will look very much like the image published here that was scanned from an unnamed British magazine.

It will be "offering a mixture of 5dr hatch and Touring", as Scott27 writes in his posting.

The 1-Series GT will be a front-wheel drive that provides rear leg room on par with the current 5-Series sedan. BMW is also planning a 3-Seriet Gran Turismo too.

Scott27 also reports that the new 1-Series family will include an additional Family Activity Sport Tourer with MPV-like features but in a unique body style design.

By now, there have been reports from multiple sources about how BMW will be expanding the next 1-Series range into several sub-segments.

It seems BMW is intent on creating as many niche segments as it can for its models. A strategic trend it began with the rapid expansion of models and model variants over the last decade, including models such as X1, X3 and the 5-Series Gran Turismo.

Uh oh, here comes a ton of Audi and Merc fanboy comments bashing BMW again. Although looking at the picture above, I do understand.

Oh dear, though I'm not a Audi nor BMW nor MB fanboy.. But the concept may prove to be disastrous, should this car be the real deal.

Well... Usually I'd say that I hated it but, actually... Unlike the 5 Series GT, I quite like this one! Let's wait for some real photos!

Head light doesn't look like a BMW at all! Tail light looks like Skoda Fabia. Let's wait for the final product.

Who designed this? Was it Adrian van Hooydonk? He must be smoking some of those funny cigarettes that are only legal in some parts of the world!

Oh god no... It's not very BMW-ish with its Passat CC healights and Mercedes tail lights. It'll just be an X1 without the X, much like the 5-GT is essentially an X6 without the off-road pretentions.

I actually like the design... a lot. Which is unusual, because I hate both hatches and Bimmers. But its nice, clean, compact, and looks sporty.

So...what's the difference between this and the normal 1-Series hatchback??? Bigger price-tag and individual rear seats???

BMW could actually redeem itself with this little number; only time will tell. They need to sort out their design language fast though! Criticisms from loyal customers on design ambiguity should be heeded or BMW sales will start to suffer!!
