Spyker Aileron Spyder to get Corvette ZR1 power - report

The bespoke 638 hp hair dryer

According to a report out of The Netherlands, the oft-delayed Spyker Aileron Spyder will adopt the Corvette ZR1's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with 638 hp (476 kW / 647 PS) and 604 lb-ft (818 Nm) of torque.

If true, this would be a momentous change as the car was originally slated to use an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V8 with 400 hp (298 kW / 405 PS) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque. It would have enabled the bespoke roadster to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds, before hitting a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h).

No word on pricing or when it will be launched, but production will likely be limited to 99 units.

From Audi powerplants to 'Vette. That's a step-up for Spyker without any hint of disrespect to Audi! Saab owners are flashy with their creations and even the new 9-5 SportCombi is pretty slick! This Aileron roadster has to be one of the longest and most luxurious of its kind on the planet. The exposed transmission gate and customised bling dashboard are Spyker USPs to date. Great car, even greater engine!! Imagine the soundtrack...,but that long wheelbase could be severely tested on tracks such as the 'Ring!

I'd have to disagree, Audi are know to have built someone the most reliable engine, GM well, we all know that most of their cars are recalled at one time or another.

The one thing GM do better than almost anyone is build good large engines. The LS engine is rock solid and pretty much indestructable whilst pumping out great performance and drivability.

maybe the long wheelbase gives it a better comfort. I think the Audi-engine whould fit the car better, but the vette one has a higher output and I can imagine, it's much cheaper ^^

The soft top kind of ruins it for me but other than that I think it's a good looking car! As xLumino said, the ZR1 engine is probably a lot cheaper... but money aside, if they wanted a power boost, they should have taken the turbo'd V10 out of the RS6!

This car is gorgeous top up or down. I love the exposed shift linkage that has been polished up. I'm so glad this is going into production.

That large motor should be able to put out that horsepower without forced induction.

Name one pump gas, naturally aspirated, street car engine that displaces 6.2L and puts out 638hp while still making 604 lb-ft. And after you find that engine can you have it mailed to your doorstep next day delivery for $21,000 ($23,000 if you want the engine controller, throttle pedal).

Steeler, are you talking to me? If you are then I know the LS9 is supercharged. Eddie thinks a 6.2 liter engine should make the same power naturally aspirated, I was challenging him to find one, anywhere.

im sure that the v8 from gm will give his car an impressive sound... as impressive as it looks, if i may say. but im still batheled. did buying saab dried spyker out and cannot afford audis engine anymore? i believe there is no need for an "all new eninge", if they really wanted more power or a faster car, why didnt they (for example) throw 2 turbos on audis 4.2. wouldnt this be cheaper than changing to a totaly diffrent engine?
