German sports car-maker mulls new production plants in China and North America

Porsche is looking to double its global sales volume to 200,000 units a year by 2018 and its CEO says it may need to take production to other parts of the world in order to achieve that goal.

CEO Matthias Mueller recently told the German magazine Focus that, "We will consider this year whether to start production in Asia or North America."

According to Focus, Porsche is considering building its upcoming compact SUV, the Cajun, at a VW plant in China which builds the Audi Q5.

The Cajun is expected in 2013.

But Mueller doesn't think that taking production out of Europe will hurt Porsche's brand credentials.

In a separate interview with another German publication, Wirtschafts Woche, Mueller said that building Porsche's in China or North America wouldn't be breaking any taboos.

"We are OK as long as we can say our cars are 'engineered by Porsche,'" Mueller said in that interview.

Porsche also recently announced that it would use a new VW plant (the former Karmann factory in Osnabrueck, Germany) for additional capacity to make the Boxster and Cayman models. VW will be using the plant to make the Golf Cabriolet.

But will Porsche's customer base rebel? Or will only the fanatics overreact?

In any case, maybe Porsche should first wait until Western consumers become accustomed to buying volume brand cars that are made in China before taking it to the luxury level.

Bye bye Porsche, hello cheap ass mass-produced-cars! Really, Porsche, no, where's the German engineering and talent and skill or at least European?

chinese production for a car is simply a no-go. not a single european car company is taking the risk to produce its cars in china. Not Renault, not Fiat, not VW... but Porsche?

high end electronics are made in China and no one complains. i'm sure they can build cars too , as long as they meet the German specifications. i have ni problems with the Cajun being built there , but i hope the 911 will remain in Germany.

VW and Audi have had plants in China for a long time now. I'm not saying Porsches should be made in China, I'm just letting you in on a little fact. The only way I'd accept a Chinese made Porsche is if the Chinese built Porsches were only sold to the Chinese customers. That's what Audi does, and since they actually are cheaply built cost 20-30% less. Please Porsche STAY IN GERMANY!

vw has been producing in china for decades... this means producing chinese market cars in china and american market cars in america.... though that probably means a long wheelbase 911!

80% cars luxury or not will be made in china eventually when china has become more skillful and experienced in car production than any other countries. If the general public in western world hates china that much, why don't they start by not buying any china-made products then?

It's not just the Western world. There are 5 billion other people on earth besides the Chinese who can make stuff. I, for one, stopped buying "Made in China" clothes 2 years ago. I have nothing against the Chinese people, but I am VERY dubious of the nation. Moreover, part of the justification that German-car buyers use to convince themselves (myself included) that German cars are worth the premium in price is that they are MADE IN GERMANY and there is a lot of R&D and well-paid employees building our goods. If you bring China into the mix, that justification goes away. As someone who had a MADE IN MEXICO VW Jetta, don't discount my limit of what I'm willing to pay for.

i am prettty sure tons of chinese garment factories will close down because of you.. of course german-made cars have its premium value and there is no doubt... what i said is just that car brands will eventually move all their production to china under their german style manufacturing management...

Actually, no, that is not what you said. What you said was, "80% cars luxury or not will be made in china eventually when china has become more skillful and experienced in car production than any other countries."

China-made Porsche may be sell to Asia to increase market share just like VW and Audi. Almost everywhere in China.

When a car maker sets up a factory in a place like China they don't suddenly throw out their manufacturing standards and accept whatever gets thrown out of the doors. The major difference between a VW factory in China and a VW factory in Europe is the time zone.

It's not like China can't manufacture high quality products. It's just that foreign companies don't invest in their manufacturing plants to produce high quality products. That's how they increase their profit margins. If porsche does take this path, i think we can trust Porsche to do it properly and bring all of their resources and know-how. Porsche needs to invest in their own manufacturing plants and not just hand it off to a third party manufacturer.

My experience with manufacturing in China...You get what you pay for and how much quality control effort you put in (i.e. watch over like a hawk). Seriously...it's really not that bad over there. But I wouldn't want to buy a 911 made anywhere but Germany...That would be like buying a John Lobb not made in the U.K.

I don't think Porsche should be troubling itself with volumes in the first place. People who buy them want a certain exclusiveness but ever since the Cayene the Porsche badge is now losing its prestige. Cajun will only be cheaper and more common...just like everything else made in China. Nail on the coffin?

What next???? Ferrari announces moving production to Korea?? Its crazy part of the appeal of marques like this is that they are built in by and in the country they come from. A Porsche from anywhere other than Germany just aint right like a Ferrari wouldn't be from anywhere other than Italy. The old Merc ML built in America just isnt the same as the cars built in Germany...... sounds to me like too much focus on numbers and not quality and sticking to your roots. Porsche are becoming a main stream manufacturer only thing missing is a hatchback and an estate and they'll offer what you can get from Merc, BMW, Audi, Ford..... etc..... so no longer a special make of car.

Hope this is not something true. If this is the issue, they certainly earn more money as China people love super branding things 100 times more than any westerns are, but the image of Porsche will no longer to be continue in many people's heart, especailly those who are growing up. Just dont be greedy, you cant earn all the money in the world.

Wait a minute, are Porsche making cars in China just for the Chinese market or the whole world? I would be fine if they were making it for the whole world. If they keep the quality up it will be the same the ones made in Germany. I don't know why people are saying 'no' just because a Porsche is being made by a person of a different race in a different country.

If Porsche will make production line in China, there will be only Cayenne and Cajun manufacturing. 911 and Panamera are much more exclusive and clients won't understand. And I also think that all these cars will be released in Chinese market

risky very risky as here in greece we had a similiar problem with customers receiving there new MERC to only discover that it was manufactured in Turkey, This was a major problem 3/4 of the cars were called back for quality control problems as the fuses were directly placed by hand this created a problem with the safety of the vehicles, not a great idea Porsche!!!!!!

It's 'Ker-ching' baby! Diversification into 'emerging' markets are always considered a risky move by any ambitious corporation, but Porsche, global prestige sports car brand extraordinaire, is big enough to make this move a success despite obvious challenges. Two many people have underestimated China (and indeed the Chinese) to their utter embarrassment! Who would have guessed that Tata, a so-called Third World car company, would now be the proud owner of J/LR (Jaguar/Land Rover)?!
