Tesla Model S struts its stuff [video]

Inching closer to production

Tesla has released a new video that shows the Model S in action.

Looking sightly different than the car that was unveiled in 2009, the Model S Alpha build is one of the first prototypes to be built. After several months of testing, engineers will fine-tune the vehicle to create a Beta build which will more closely mimic the production Model S that is due in 2012.

According to Graham Sutherland, a Tesla Vehicle Dynamicist, "The first Alpha is amazingly agile for a car of its size. It has great handling balance and poised ride with communicative steering. Just goes to show what combining a low center of gravity with a very stiff body structure can achieve."

As we have previously reported, the Model S is motivated by an electric motor that is powered by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery. It enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, hit a top speed of 120 mph (193 km/h), and travel up to 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

So, to sum up, it is very innovative and original in terms of design.

I'm far from a Porsche fan, but that sounds like something they could have told him years ago...

on the Model S' styling, it looks like a little bit of everything... just doesn't seem to have its own character on the styling department.

Looking at it's carbody and dashboard I can spot some A5 Sportback influence.

It's silence is no more or less dangerous then a car with a gasoline engine. On my local news this morning they reported on a high school girl who was struck and killed while crossing a street on the way to school. The car appeared to be a 2010 Hyundai Sonata. The sound a car makes is unimportant, it's paying full attention when we're around and in moving vehicles, that is important.

oh, it looks like... a car ^^ come on guys, your comparisons are very boring. it's everytime the same. looks like this, looks like this. Just take a look at the overall car and you will see a masterpiece of artwork in design. The specs of the Tesla Sedan are awesome. With a regenerative energy source for civil-households it will be THE car for me!

I agree, the Model S looks fantastic. Having a few design cues remind us of other cars happens all the time. Just recently people were commenting on how the new Ford Focus EV's grill looked like an Aston Martin's grill.

Oh dear! Tesla builds a stuttering multi-design hybrid! How original! Yes, it looks great, but hardly 'original'! The top speed is hardly headline-grabbing (ok, maybe for a hybrid sports saloon) and what about the sound? Exactly! The worst is the name; Model S. Need I say more?

I think you may have mistaken this for the Fisker Karma which is a plug-in hybrid. The Tesla Model S is 100% electric. And there is nothing wrong with the name, Ford used the names Model-A and Model-T and Jaguar used names like E-type and S-type so what's the problem with Model S ? Calm Down.

What a stupid video.. so tired of these companies wanting you to look at their car while it's flying down some road 100yds from the camera. How about you guys SLOW IT DOWN and show off the car. This is the crap Lexus and Mercedes NEVER DO!!!
