Will likely debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

New details are starting to emerge about Audi's highly anticipated Q3 crossover.

Created to battle the BMW X1 and Mercedes BLK / GLC, the Q3 will be underpinned by the same platform as the Volkswagen Tiguan. While our spies haven't been able to get a good glimpse of the model, the crossover is expected to feature sporty styling inspired by the Cross Coupe quattro concept that debuted at the 2007 Shanghai Motor Show.

At launch, engine options are slated to include a 2.0-liter TFSI with 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp) and 211 PS (155 kW / 208 hp) as well as a 2.0-liter TDI that cranks out 170 PS (125 kW / 168 hp). They will be mated to the usual transmission choices and C02 emissions are expected to range from 158 g/km to 184 g/km.

The Q3 will likely be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, before going on sale in late September or early October (in Germany).

this car makes me think of the Russian dolls called Matrioska if I remember well: a smaller one inside a bigger one a.s.o until you'll find a really tiny one. That's exactly what Audi does now: Q7, inside of it is Q5, then Q3, and then probably Q1, Q-1, Q-2, etc and finally you'll see the bburago like models sized cars... same car different sizes, no other differences and that's too bad. They are afraid to try something else regarding the design?

he, he... sorry if you think so... in the first place I'm a big fan of Audi and I've always been... simply I just want to see something NEW in their model line, (although I know that experimenting in the premium class is not exactly an option considering the target market), something let's say... shocking, like the R8 was and still is... that's all... and what is wrong with that comparison with these dolls??? :D

Shocking doesn't always equate to being a high volume seller, which this is undoubtedly intended to be. It's called going with what works + brand identity. Personally I think the Q5 is much more than a re-sized Q7. Proportion and design language is different and the Q5 has shown itself to be the segment leader i.e. a better thought out and built Audi than the 7.

Wouldn't be shocked if porsche launch their equivalent model in 2014. Or Vw a Q5 equivalent in 2015.

it'll certainly be a much better looking thing than the VW counterpart - Tiguan - and a much better handling one for sure.

The slopey boot line will mean the load space in the back wont be that great and its a soft roader so silly question.... if its not big enough inside to use like an estate car and its not really much of an off roader then whats the point?? Why not buy an A3 estate instead?

The pics show VW New York (Tiguan) rims - sure that's not a Tiguan update?

The Q5 has quickly made a great impression being the Q7's junior brother and it already has an in-house rival in the forthcoming Porsche Cajun. The Q5 has become a far better looking BMW X3 and better seller without encroaching on the Q7's territory. The Q3 must repeat Q5's feat by not cannibalising sales from the Q5 yet remain a mini SUV class leader. Tough act to follow, but not impossible. Simple yet slick and uniform design has become Audi corporate signature recently. The Q3 could be the BMW X1 rival and the Audi predictably wins the Looks Contest hands-down yet again!
