Mercedes-Benz 'Sunday Drivers' ad - making of video

Making-of video goes behind the scenes on the set of Mercedes-Benz ad that featured F1 legends Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen

Here's a making-of video of the Mercedes-Benz ad called 'Sunday Drivers' that featured Michael Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen.

The making-of goes behind the scenes at how Mercedes-Benz shot a commercial in brutal winter weather in the mountains to demostrate the capabilities of its 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

What this video doesn't explain, though, is how two versions of this ad came to be made.

In the one we see here, which is the ad that Mercedes-Benz aired on German television, the two F1 legends ultimately get surpassed by an older gentleman in a G-Class Benz.

A version that was released online had a young British woman passing the two and referring to them as 'senior citizens'.

Fine for the Internet but a bit too cruel for actual television?

The "older gentleman" in the G-Class is Franz Beckenbauer, a very famous football player and football coach. He won the Fifa WorldCup 1974 (player) and 1990 (coach). Everyone in Germany knows him. But who is the young British woman?

Trust me...tons of people around the world know of 'The Kaizer', just not in America where football, sorry soccer, takes a back seat to other sports.

Why is Franz not in the finished version on YouTube - some young lady is?

Think the German version is much better - bit like most German things!

haha.. I also thought that the end of the "original" ad with that chick in the G Klasse was a bit odd and out of place. With Beckenbauer in the car it all "makes sense".

I'm struggling to think of any other manufacturer that would allow an officially sanctioned video to have the swear words 'f*ck' and 'sh*tless' in it :)

I share your concern , Hellbound . To think that this advertisement was presented by Mercedes-Benz , purveyor of passenger vehicles normally associated with world dignitaries , sovereign heads of state , the Pope...among other things . DaimlerBenz... your slip is showing .
