BMW X1 U.S. launch delayed
Can barely keep with up with European demand
It's no secret that the BMW X1 is insanely popular - as it recently overtook the Audi Q5 to become Europe's top selling premium SUV - but a new report is indicting the unprecedented demand will cause the company to postpone the US launch.
In an interview with Car and Driver, BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky said the X1 won't be coming "until fall of 2011 at the absolute earliest." This is because the Leipzig plant can barely keep up European orders and a US launch simply isn't feasible at the moment.
Despite the delay, America's neighbors to the north (Canada for the scholars among us) will get the X1 early this year as scheduled.

X1 more popular than Q5 in Europe ? You're kidding.
a) different categories
b) X1 is really looking cheap
The new X3 is the serious competitor with Audi's Q5.

dude, it doesn't matter that they're different categories, what the article was saying (read it again!) is that OVERALL, the X1 is the best-selling premium SUV in Europe. Period. I'm not saying that it's better than the Q5 or not, it just sells more... anyways, where are the lemmings that were calling&predicting this an "epic fail" a little more than year ago, on this very website?

I still believe the X5 is still the number 1 selling SUV, so anything that looks like that will sell!

That's OK BMW, you can keep the X1 in Europe...This is nothing compared to the Q5, and neither is the X3. IMO BMW styling doesn't translate that well to SUVs period. The X5 is no looker either.

Think the Q5 isn't a looker, give it a MacDonalds diet and you get a Q7.....

i wanted to replace my old A4 quattro wagon with the X1, but it's just too damn ugly.

When i does arrive in the US they'll wonder what all the hype was about.... truely ugly and pointless car.

the delay has more to do with identity infringement with the Pigs of Angry Birds.

It shouldn't be in the "premium SUV" category to begin with! There's nothing premium about it.

BMW's 'flame surface' design language is in crisis and ruining future products and I hope the VED supercar will be spared this aesthetic aberration!

Ok so the x1 isnt to everyones tastes but lets be honest when bmw makes a "different" car everyone has a go and when it plays the game more safely (5er F10) everyone says its boring. oh and @GTurbo the x1 isnt part of the flame surfacing era its a generation ahead, nor more flame surfacing bimmers are designed now :)

I really like this car! There are plenty on the roads here in South Africa, it looks so good. BMW is back on track wrt styling imo.
