Wikispeed SGT01 seeks funding in Detroit
Wikispeed SGT01 prototype 11.01.2011

Different by design

If you're rich and love investing in risky projects, Wikispeed wants to hear from you as the automotive startup has just unveiled their new SGT01 and is looking for backers to get the car into mass production.

While we certainly have our doubts, the 1,300 lb (590 kg) vehicle is envisioned as a futuristic four-seater with an extruded aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber body.

Powertain details remain mysterious, but the car reportedly uses a mid-mounted 1.8-liter four-cylinder Honda engine and a five-speed automatic. This theoretically allows the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds, hit a top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h), and return 114 mpg highway.

If you're feeling lucky, you can pre-order one for $28,800 but the price is expected to drop to $20,000 when (or if) mass production ensues.

What would be the purpose of a moderately fast 4 seater that looks like a race car?

one evening, after many many many beers, some guy put the question: what if a cheap, street legal lemans look-alike car would be mass produced, would you buy it? some others guys, equally intoxicated replied: hell yeah! why not?! so you have it: wikispeed.

There obviously wasn't an industrial designer within a thousand miles of this stinker!!

This might seem like a pointless project from the perspective of a road vehicle, it would provide a great value platform for motorsport. Think single make series, track days, tarmac rallies, etc. Nice affordable way to get out there and drive home afterwards.

THE MOST POWERFUL ENGINE - PAUT MOTOR- YouTube Prototype 2 is performed as an engine with two-sided pistons, positioned at 90? to each other, in combination with PAUT two-stroke cycles (fig 1). Such construction provides an engine containing less assembling parts, having smaller mass to power and overall-dimensions to power ratios, which are the presumptions for a successful product to be accomplished and for low cost production/exploitation to be expected. Smaller mass, compared to the prior art engines, derives from the fact that PAUT engine contains considerably less assembling parts lacking elements such as: rods, camshafts, camshaft's driving parts, some valves, large heads. The very construction of the two-sided piston (fig 3) has more advantages. Contact area between two-sided piston and cylinder is considerably larger compared to prior art pistons. Hence, specific pressures are lower and since the two-sided piston is lubricated under the pressure, the friction is considerably smaller, the more so as we know that normal force Fn in the engine center equals zero (fig 2a). All these results with less wear of the piston and the cylinder. Such a two-sided piston has considerably smaller mass compared to the prior art assembly it replaces, consisting of two pistons with their prison-shafts and two belonging rods, resulting in lessening of linear motion
