BMW Z4 may get 4-cylinder turbo base engine - report
BMW Z4 M Sport package

Report says BMW will be replacing the Z4's naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder with a turbo 4-cylinder

The news is brief because it comes from a tweet.

Yes, Automobile magazine has tweeted a report that the next Z4 will be coming with a turbocharged four-cylinder in the base-model, replacing the naturally aspirated 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder.

The Twitter post reads as follows:

BMW new 4-cyl coming this year in Z4 roadster. Replaces nat asp 6, so at least 200 hp

It's been hinted for a while that BMW is developing a new turbocharged four-cylinder (likely a 2.0 liter) gasoline/petrol engine to fit into its lineup. It's difficult to speculate to what power levels the new power plant will be configured, but if it is to replace the 258 PS (255 bhp / 192kW) of the sDrive30i (with the 3.0 liter naturally breathing inline 6-cylinder), then a comparable output level is to be expected.

Currently, BMW has no turbocharged 4-cylinder petrols in its power plant lineup and has historically favored naturally aspirated engines. But advances in turbo technology plus growing emission restrictions has changed that equation and it only seems inevitable that BMW would go down that route.

announced at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, to be first used in the Mk5 Golf GT, the 125 kW 1.4 litre TSI engine is a "Twincharger", and uses both a turbocharger and a supercharger. a VW story. now, 6 years later, BMW thinks of 4 cylinder turbos... better later than never.

Nice that they are doing it now I find the base 23i quite weak.

Thank you needed to SAAB? In which case it could be 2.0T from 9-3/9-5 - power sounds about right with some good mapping.

considering Audi's 211 BHP 2.0 Turbo,Insignia's 220 BHP and Mondeos / S60 - 203 BHP the expected power should be around 230-240 BHP with some 350 Nm.

Audi also has a 270ps version of their 2.0T (TT-S, S3) Trouble is unless BMW work wonders with the new engine its not going to be that much cleaner than their current 3.0 n/a engine (currently 170g/km) current 2.0 turbos are about that now. Also, it wont sound as good - fairly important in a sports car I would have thought...

Charlemagne, not true that BMW is only now "thinking of 4 cylinder turbos..." They have been selling 4 cyl turbocharged engines in the Mini Cooper S for years. Even though the engine is built and used in collaboration with Peugeot it is pretty much completely a BMW design. I must say that I will miss the destinctive straight six snarl, especially with the roof down.

Kobus, as you said, "in collaboration with Peugeot". I'm not saying BMW needs a 1.4 l ! it'll be a 2.0 or even larger, for sure. 4 cyl aren't that bad. after all we're talking bmw "motoren" here...

charlemagne, a quick wiki quote fyi: "2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. BMW's first production turbo, it produced 170 hp (127 kW) at 5800 rpm". FWIW BMW has the record for the most powerful F1 motor, it was a 1.5L Turbo back in the 1980's. Iirc it was 1200hp+, the dyno only measured to 1200hp.

Ok, since we are quoting Wikipedia and all here is one as well: "The first production turbocharged automobile engines came from General Motors in 1962. The Y-body Oldsmobile Cutlass Jetfire was fitted with a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger and the Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder with a TRW turbocharger." Just because BMW put one on a 4cyl doesn't make them automotive gods. Lets leave the apotheosis theory where it belongs, with GM.
