BMW tops Mercedes and Audi in 2010 passenger car sales

All three German premium brands saw a large increase in sales in 2010 due to massive growth in China

The battle of the Big 3 premium brands rages on. And, once again, BMW is on top.

BMW beat out its arch-rivals Audi and Mercedes-Benz for the title of global leader in premium brand sales for 2010. BMW AG sold 1,224,280 units last year, up 14.6 percent over 2009. BMW Group, which includes the MINI and Rolls-Royce brands, sold a total of 1.46 million units with global sales up 13.6 percent on 2009 figures.

The Mercedes-Benz brand came in second with 1.17 million unit sales in 2010, a rise of 15.3 percent over the previous year.  Including the Smart brand, which saw an astounding drop of 17 percent, Daimler's car sales rose 12 percent in 2010 to 1.27 million.

Audi placed third, but the VW Group premium brand also saw a 15 percent rise in sales with 1.09 million units for 2010.

The boost in sales seen by all three automakers was mainly the result of a rebounding market in the United States and exponential growth in China.

BMW and MINI sold 168,000 units in China in 2010, a rise of 86.7% over 2009.

BMW Group's volume, larger than its own prediction of 1.4 million units, was boosted by a new 5-Series which increased deliveries more than 22 percent over the previous model in 2009. BMW sold 211,968 units of the 5-Series in 2010.

"2010 was a very successful year for us. We are "spot on" with our new models and are building the cars people desire," said Ian Robertson, sales and marketing chief at BMW, at the Detroit auto show.

It seems as though every few weeks there's a new story saying a different one of these 3 is selling the most cars. Which is it?

It depends where you look. If you look at sales figures only for the United States, then Lexus has been the leading premium brand there for about a decade. But for certain months of the year, they get beat by BMW. Globally, though, it's usually a battle between BMW, Mercedes and Audi, with Audi still trailing the first two more established brands.

WCF, i would have prefered you stop feeding the BMW vs Mercedes vs Audi fanboys war and continue F1 coverage instead.

Not sure how 'fair' these stats are. BMW and Merc are parent companies that have their own subsidiaries i.e. Mini, smart e.t.c. So how can they compare sales realistically with Audi which is under VW? What are the stats 'mano ? mano' is a more relevant question!

@ Microice-RS - Please read again: BMW vehicles only sales are 1.22 mil (The BMW Group incl Rols Royce & Mini are 1.46 mil) - then comes M/Benz 1.17 mil (M/Benz Group 1.27 mil) and only then comes Audi 3rd at 1.092 mil vehicles.

So please state the facts and not your hopeful opinion. Audi fans were bragging earlier in the year how the will beat both BMW & Merc in vehicle sales for 2010 and guess what.... Audi fell short AGAIN...

the biggest deficit that Audi has is in the US market. 2010 was Audi?s best year ever and their best year in the US as well, the first time they sold over 100.000 cars there. but BMW and Mercedes have sold ~200.000 each. that?s why Audi like BMW wants an own production plant in the US. It doesn`t matter which one leads, all 3 are doing amazingly well.

not that much of a surprise if you consider the new Countryman, X3,X1 and specialy the new 5-Series, so I would be surprised if Bmw wasn't topping the sales at this point. I am surprised with audi I confess, after all they lunched the A1, wasn't that suposed to sell like "hot cakes"???? Anyways, dont take me wrong cause its just my opinion but I will never consider audi has a premium brand cause after all they are nothing but "pimped" VW's rebadged that all look the same.

Haters will always hate velsatis. Audi is the cash cow of VW and pretty independent (as long as they are successful that won`t change). The only thing that Audi and VW really share are some smaller engines and 2 platforms for their smaller models (A1 and A3), even many electronic parts, incl. the navigation systems are different, not to mention the total difference of the VW and Audi interiors. VW is using touchscreens, Audi MMIs. even the transmission concepts differ. And as u should know, BMW or Mercedes are no better. BMW is using the smaller Peugeot engines for their Mini. The 1,4- 1,6-Liter engines can also be found in the Peugeot 207 and 308 and Citro?n C4 und C4 Picasso. And Mercedes made an agreement with Renault and Nissan a few months ago. The next Smart for 4 will be build on the platform of the Renault Twingo and Mercedes , like BMW, will also use the smaller engines from Nissan and Renault for their Smart and smaller Mercedes models. And if u ask me i`d rather take parts from VW than from Renault/Peugeot or Nissan. phrases like "Audi are just rebadged VWs" have always been old, lame and cheap and are more so now. Audi has become a serious premium contender. By the way Audi as the brand "Horch" (Audi is latin for Horch) is even older than BMW and almost as old as Mercedes. all 3 companies are great and deserve respect.

Has for the Bmw example, that is between mini and peugeot not bmw shares am engine with any peugeot making this point a fail. regarding the Smart sharing the platform and even components with the twingo, it still didnt happen but still and again that is between Smart and Renault not Mercedes, regarding the future of component sharing, between the 2 groups, 1st off, it still didnt happen yet so all u are doing is speculation, 2nd, do you actually think we will see in the future an E-Klass or an S-klass with a Renault/Nissan engine in it??? wake up mate, Mercedes might even share its "know-how" with the "French" but put their engines under an S!!!! What a fail of yours. As to the Audi sharing components with VW, u clearly have no idea do you??? "Audi is the cash cow of VW and pretty independent" - They make money because they share components with vw making production of their vehicules obviosly cheaper than a Mercedes or BMW, its plain logics mate. regarding the cow part, u dont actually know how many VW cars are sold around the world every year to make that statement do you???? it shows just a bit lol "some smaller engines", do you even know whats the best sold engine in the entire Audi range??? clearly not. Just to finalise, u never owned an audi, vw, seat or skoda did you??? I used to have a Seat and u clearly dont know how much in my car was the same as in an audi. Inform yourself before making yourself look stupid

The Three Musketeers of world motoring are still leading the way! However, BMW should rethink their design and engineering strategy and go back to basics; Subaru & Mazda are already doing that! In a bid to follow Mercedes Benz's luxury predilection, BMW cars (especially the 5series) has become heavier and Chris Bangled, flame surfaced ugly! The new 6 is no match for previous model's visual brawn and dynamic sophistication. Even worse, it's MI4's (the movie) product placement item!
