Volt continues its success at racking up awards since its launch last year

The praise keeps coming for the Chevy Volt.

In another win for GM's new plug-in hybrid model, the Volt has been voted North American Car of the Year beating out two other finalists - the Hyundai Sonata and the Nissan Leaf, an all-electric vehicle.

Also awarded was the prize for North American Truck of the Year, which went to the Ford Explorer.

Both prizes were announced at the 2011 North American International Auto Show taking place in Detroit this week.

The Chevrolet Volt continues to rack up trophies since its launch last year as it also took home the titles of Motor Trend Car of the Year, Automobile Magazine's Car of the Year and the Free Press Car of the Year.

But this win represents a huge marketing advantage for the Volt since the prize is one of the most prestigious in the industry. The North American Car and Truck of the Year awards are presided over by a jury of 49 veteran automotive journalists from both Canada and the United States and are issued each year under the spotlight of the Detroit auto show.

After the headline-grabbing Camaro (aka Bumblebee), this is a great result for Chevy! Ford also deserve their moment of success with an SUV (Explorer) after the fuel crisis and near bankruptcy of late in America! I wonder why North Americans call this car a 'Truck'!!

I wonder how much Ford and GM paid them this time. Remember when the Focus and Transit Connect won last year. What a joke.

Well, probably more than what the competitors could have offered. Which means Ford has more money, which means they sell more, which means people like Ford more than other brands, which finally means Ford ARE better than the other brands in the race for Car or Truck of the year. ;)

@ Hitar_potar: People don't like Ford the most of other brands.... Toyota is still the #1 Manufacturer in the world? Also Toyota is WAY past the big three when it comes to profitability.
