VW will have to field more products in the market if it wants to grow its sales there

Volkswagen is going to need another SUV model if it is to go head to head with the likes of GM, Ford and Toyota in the United States market.

That is what VW of America chief Jonathan Browning believes.

"We will be looking to really grow, particularly in the compact SUV segment," Browning told Bloomberg in a phone interview. "Over time, I think there's also scope for growth in terms of a larger SUV within the portfolio."

In the United States, VW sells the Tiguan compact SUV and the full-sized Touareg SUV. VW is likely looking to fill a gap between those two models and market a mid-sized SUV.

VW has an ambitious plan to become the world's largest automaker by 2018, selling over 10 million units annually. Part of that plan calls for U.S. market sales of 1 million units per year. VW Group, including sales of the Audi brand, sold only 358,500 units in the United States in 2010, including 20,946 Tiguans and 4,713 Touaregs.

In comparison, the best-selling SUV in the U.S., the Honda CR-V, sold 203,714 units in 2010. SUVs still make up 29 percent of all passenger vehicles sales there.

VW will introduced at the Detroit auto show next week the NMS (New Medium-sized Sedan) which will replace the smaller outgoing Passat. It will be competitively priced at around $20,000 (about $7,000 less than the previous Passat) and take on the likes of the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, two of the largest-selling passenger cars in the market.

So, Volkswagen is essentially going to take an Audi Q5 and dumb it down/make it worse and slap on VW emblems. Nice. I'll stick with the Q5.

I think that it will be more along the lines of a Highlander/Pilot competitor. It will likely be a seven passenger, transverse engine crossover based on the NMS. Built inexpensivly in Tennessey.

Why? VW already has the Toureg, which is based on the same platform as the seven passenger Audi Q7. The NMS is probably based upon the same platform as the Audi A5 Sportback, which is what the Audi Q5 is based on. It would only make sense to manufacture an SUV between the Tiguan and Toureg in size.

Or they could just add a smaller, well mostly cheaper SUV than the Tiguan, see their Skoda Yeti (already on the market in Europe) Or that will be a Q3's brother.

Who needs SUV's? Most of them are incrediblly ugly, especially the americsn models. No one drives offroad, and when you do, then buy a defender!

Unfortunately not all people (Americans) are blessed with rational thought and so they buy V8 SUVs for grocery shopping.

All VW group cars sold in states are premium. Can we really compare golf/jetta to corolla? Americans like cheap, big things and VW doesnt make any unless they make another camper van for hippies...sorry, greenies

Wouldn't it be easier to just make an SUV based upon the Amarok, like Chevrolet and Toyota did with their trucks?

VW should just put in the 2.0-liter 140 bhp TDI engine from the current Jetta/Golf into the Tiguan with a seven-speed DSG transmission for sale in the USA. Watch Tiguan sales really take off after that change. :-)

I just leased my second VW (2012 Passat), but what I really wanted this time around was a midsize SUV. VW has the compact Tiguan and full size Touareg, but neither of these met my needs. The Tiguan is too compact and Touareg is out of my price range. Here is a suggestion from a VW customer: build a midsize SUV based on the CC or Passat with a V-6 engine and priced at about $25,000 going up from there to $30,000. Then you can compete with the Toyota Highlander, the Ford Edge, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Murano, especially if you can keep the price down to under $30,000. A CC based SUV would be striking. JM2C. When my current lease is over, I will be looking for just what I have described here. You have three years to get it together, or I may wander over to Ford or Nissan. Smile.
