Outline for 3 new BMW front-wheel drive models emerge

More details have emerged on the upcoming front-wheel drive model range that BMW intends on bringing to market in the next few years.

BMW blog has reported on an outline for 3 new front-drive models provided by trusted BMW source Scott27 (although the site does mention that they were not able to confirm the details with other sources).

The 3 new front-wheel drive BMWs will mark new segment entries for the Bavarian brand. They are described as a Compact, a Compactive Sport Gran Tourer and a Family Activity Sports Tourer.

The compact will be a hatch, as we've described in a previous report. The Compactive Sport Gran Tourer will be a small minivan while the Family Activity Sports Tourer will be a larger crossover-like vehicle for families - a cross between a mid-sized minivan and a BMW X-model with a higher seating position.

We don't get any details on what kind of dimensions these new models will come in or in which particular segments they will compete. Perhaps the small minivan will offer a premium alternative to the popular volume models such as the Ford C-Max and VW Touran. And that the larger crossover will offer something new in the mid-sized or full-sized MPV segments.

What is really unclear is where that new entry-level hatch fits in. Will the 1-Series grow (or become the 2-Series) to make room for an A3-competing front-drive hatchback or will the new model be smaller and go squarely up against the A1?

Lots of questions remain.

Great machines but not too sure of front-drive though. Personally prefer a rear-drive or all-wheel drive...still the ultimate driving machine.

BMW and FWD... Next time when the issue of Audi copying Benz or BMW comes up again, i urge WCF to bump this thread.

Since when did Audi create FWD? How would that be copying? You just sound like a mad Audi fan-boy. They are making something very cheap to profit off of a different market, that is what car manufacturers do.

@BavarianMS - C'mon, you're more intelligent than that. Otherwise you have completely and utterly missed the point. And a good one at that. As for this car...as far from the ultimate driving machine as one can get.

It sounds like BMW is creating a scion-like model line-up. I am really excited to see the exterior/interior design and possibly drive the new front-wheel drive cars from BMW. I read on an advertising website, a few months ago, that BMW has increased its advertising budget for 2011. Hence, I am noticing more BMW ads around the web. I can see a large SUV and a smaller one, which exist already, however 2 minivans ? I afree with jai_mav ... WHY 2 ?! I guess there will be a Mazda 5 type of minivan and a larger toyota sienna type of minivan ? ... very curious to what BMW has in store for 2011

Agree with catchmyshadow. Odd thing though is most people who drive 1series already think its front wheel drive. If BMW does make something smaller than 1series where does it leave mini?

This is happening to all car manufacturers due to higher mileage requirements set by the governments. Honestly though BMW is a great brand but I don't see the need for 3 new compact FWD cars. If you have too...Make the 1 series FWD and make it smaller, it's already almost the same size as a 3 series. BMW and Mercedes Benz damage their image when they try to build a small entry level car like this...most of the luxury & performance you expect is missing and you are left with an overly expensive competitor to the VW Golf.

I see you've never heard of the A Class. Mercedes is a full line auto company.

As an owner of an E39 M5 looking for a minivan for long road trips...I look forward to seeing an offering or 2 from BMW to choose from. FWD makes sense for a minivan. However, it does seem somehow wrong that the compact is FWD.

oh come on...you cant just ruin BMW longterm tradition of RWD cars...I am strictly against FWD..if only I could do anything about it... I wouldnt mind BMW vans...but imho it is absolutely dehonesting to produce FWD cars...it is serious breaking of rules and idea of whole brand

A highly successful RWD car firm wants to go FWD. Not even VW will be flattered by this!

This should be a good car I guess. But on all this Audi fanboy stuff, I wonder who JF Musual is on worldcarfans.
